paulski
Hey All, I posted this on the Bethesda Fallout Forums, but I wanted to post it here as well, just in case some people only use one of the forums... Please excuse me if that gets on anyone’s nerves, I’ll take it down from one of the forums if need be! I just wanted to post a video link to a F3 Mod I created recently, as part of a Uni Project and also my own interest, in which I tried to use Fallout 3 to create an experience both core gamers and learner gamers would enjoy. Inside of the mod, you come across a vault which has feuding sides to it, due to mysterious disappearances of people living in the vault. You are asked to infiltrate the sectioned off part to the vault, by learning a secret code those members have started to use (in this cases parts of the French language). From here you will then be able to find what was really causing the disappearances in the vault! By placing the learning inside of the story, it helps to make it feel less like learning, and instead part of a more enjoyable gaming experience. Warning! It might have some little spoilers for people! But I am updating some parts of the level to make it more efficient and overall more enjoyable. Also please excuse the lip syncing; it was quite difficult to sometimes find a good pre-set generic lip file to use for the voice-overs! More information on the Mod Quest can be seen here on my website I’ll be posting the plug-in on the Nexus in a short while, but I wanted to update a few more things first, but it would be really cool to see what anyone thinks of the overall idea, or perhaps may have some interesting ideas for things I could do to improve on it at the moment before I post it out into the big wide Fallout world :) Also just wanted to say a big thank you to TGBlank and others for their help and assistance on the forums when I was bugging with questions! Thanks everyone :)
Callighan
Perhaps the "french" in your post sub heading puts a lot of people off (no offense). Anyhow, I viewed your video and was surprised to see it well made. Rather a boring mod without much killing an such (in contrast with the nature of the Fallout world). However, as a student of a foreign language myself, I like the idea a lot. I'm most curious as how complex the conversations are, as a game differs from real world conversations which is more intricate. Looking forward to experiencing your mod. Cheers! paulski
Hey, lol that is a good point, if only I could ammend it, I should have used the name of the Quest instead! To start the game there is little killing, its more about sneaking in to the other section, and making sure that you can hold your own with a simple conversation that they are using, where you then move on to a killing area :) I tried to make the game play not last much longer than an hour, but that would also down to how well the gamer does through the language part and the core gaming part :) With the conversation aspect, I tried to make it for a beginner learner, which is also how the PC is viewing things from the quest, as they are having to learn a "secret" language from the start, rather than knowing the language from the beginning. The first section gives you clues on what they've heard them saying, then you put this into action you when infiltrate the other area. You'll learn quite simple parts to the language, hello, bye, I would like, how are you, your name, those sorts of ones, as I tried to keep the learning part not too big and a good base for new learners. I think the dialogue system in F3 works really well for this idea, the only downside being that you don't speak it back to the NPC in real life, you just select the correct dialogue. I think that is why French was a good choice for the learning element. Thanks again mate, I'll give you a shout when I upload it :)
Callighan
Well if there's any critique I can give to you is that the dialogue sounds awkward. Any chance of making a Deutsche or Esperanto mod? :P
paulski
All critiques are welcome :) Haha if you think that French was a bad idea then perhaps I should have looked at those two! I'll try and localise the game in to all languages when I've got all the time in the world in my hands lol :)
