Trying to edit container contents - not working (DUPLICATE000)

When I attempt to edit an existing container (to add my modded items to it), once I add the items and save the plugin, I reload it only to find my changes have been saved to a new container called oldcontainernameDUPLICATE000. How do I make it not do this?

You are probably trying to modify a container that is part of a plugin (ESP) rather than a master (ESM) file. This sort of thing cannot be done in the GECK without first converting the source ESP file into a master, using FNVEdit. This procedure is explained in this video tutorial.
