Modding animation for a power "lance" weapon possible?

I originally thought of the idea of a [Gauss/pneumatic/burst] Powered Lance for the Halo universe (a Halo 2 weapon mod)

but as time went on, i never went through with it.

anyways, i intend to redesign the Burst lance from the ground up to better suit fallout in look and style. (using 3DS or Blender)

however i am fairly new at modding for fallout 3 and curious if its possible to animate the weapon so the weapon extends as its being fired(used)?

at the same time curious if i can attain this result while getting a stabbing or lunging type motion from the character model.

 

it wouldnt look right if the character were swinging it around, when its sole perpose and physical power comes from the sudden extension of the lance its self in peak thrust.

 

So, you think its possible?

remember im a n00b at modding fallout 3

but i plan on working hard to make this work if its even possible. but i dont want to put forth the effort if its impossible to begin with,
