jaysus
well im still struggling with max 8 and i still use ps 7 too :P (got it like 10 yrs back during a traineeship lol) but i want the new max for the sculpting and texture painting... as i want ps cs4 for the ability to use scripts without installing usermade plugins and learning java, cs4 offers texture painting too now btw ;)so i guess its time for a step foward into the new age :D
Kalten1979
I use blender. Its the best for me.I have tryed 3Dmax and cinema4d, but that was too difficult in my eyes. Blender is free and in some areas it is better than other programms.
Skree000
@jayyup, its all old news, but i stick with what i know best, cos im stubborn like that :) i do use ps cs3, but its very unstable. nothing like the good old photoshops. Bodypaint3d is teh uberz. makes every other texture painting program look like crap, including zbrush's texture painting, photoshopcs4's 3d painting, DeepPaint... all competitors are inferior, its part of the Maxon cinema 4d suite, can also do all kinds of things, but the only part i use is the 3dpaint part. Lag free, no silly bs with projections or 'dropping the to the canvas' or crap like that. it even has photoshop layers and filters, blend modes and brushes, yet it does a better job than photoshop itself. Its got a little bit of a learning curve though, but not as steep as zbrush. thats Bodypaint's only flaw. its a very confusing program until someone shows you how to use it. Luckily at my last studio the guy next to me showed me where all the buttons are. Basic workflow is a bit tricky, but soooo powerful once you harness it for modelling: 3dsmaxfor hipoly: zbrushfor textures: photoshopfor texture-painting: bodypaintfor normal maps: photoshop's nvidia texture-tools + Crazybump. XxPkRaperxX
Thanks for all the posts. I'll look into the programs you suggested.
XxPkRaperxX
3ds max 2010 is a good program. i'm not great with it... i have an example of what i have made with it. if you want to use any of my models in a mod, just ask me here's the link http://www.turbosquid.com/3d-models/free-t...3d-model/412088this is an old model and i've fixed a lot of things with it. i'm going to put a lot of new models up soon This first weapon I was going to try and make was a "Tommy gun", you used 3Ds Max for that? jaysus
@skree ya i tried bodypaint once you mentioned it in the pms, but well it was a totally different interface once again lol... and since i just started out with zbrush ill try to understand that one first, the best feature of it is imo that you can make a highpoly the same time you make a texture, aka you model a stitch/scratch/etc and give it a colour which gets transferred to the texture while you paint... i find that really useful :)it also looks way better for wip shots than max lol, it has this professionel feeling due to the shading i guess... Skree000
yes zbrush is awesome. a hipoly essential imho! allows artists to forget about polygons and edges and just make sculptures. not having to worry about the process, and just having fun is a definite plus :)
dthumb
Heck, if you have that much money to blow on autodesk 3d software or zbrush, (plus lotsa free time and depending on where you live) you might as well enroll on a short term course on 3d. jaysus
why? i never had trouble following an online tutorial lol... had blender in uni but i never got behind its secrets :Pso i guess i at leats am not the person to get tutored by a lesson... a constant sidekick ala master miyagi is a different thing tho, but you only get these under circumstances like the experience skree described, aka at a job where you work together constantly with highly talented people... or if you have a modding group or somin with msn/icq/skype running all the time lessons like in school are never really useful for an individual as every individual has different learning patterns which cant be adressed by teachers, its an often overlooked phenomen which results in so many school drop outs and under educated people who in fact are highly intelligent and clever, just that the way they are being teached is nothing their brain can coop with... (if that interests you read some books about the brain, how it works, how its created and grows, and its functions... synapsis and so on)
BigKevSexyMan
I hear GIMP is pretty good for texturing and stuff, but I don't have the experience to say for sure. It's free though.
