running BOSS under Vista/Window 7

I have spent about 5 days trying to MOD Oblivion ...

I have now created a massive set of omod files, and am ALMOST at a stage where I can actually play. However I can't get BOSS to work under windows 7.

If I run the BOSS.bat, I get access denied errors, and my mods arn't reordered.

If I run BOSS.bat as an administrator, then the BOSStext.log is completly empty.

any help appresiated

either a) turn of UAC

or b) move oblivion install dir to non UAC controlled location (anything is fine except program files, windows, users)

and then BOSS'll run fine (if you have the C++ required download installed)

I use BOSS with Win7 x64 with no problems.

Have you tried reinstalling BOSS?

Do you have the required Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library 2008.

Link: Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library 2008 (~1.7MB download)

BOSS does not work with OMODS, only .esm and esp files. When you activate an OMOD. it places an esp file in the \data folder that BOSS can work with.

Is BOSS installed in your \data folder and not your OBMM folder? - MUST be in the \Data folder to work.

Is your game installed in the default location? (not the best place)

Is UAC on?

Are your OMODS active? (blue and not green blocks in OBMM)

BOSS only works on active .esp files so you must first activate them in OBMM Then an esp will be created and placed in the left panel.

Did you make the mistake of installing a bunch of mods without testing? :wallbash:

Back up - un activate ALL OMODS (make the blocks green and not blue.)

Now does your game start normally? With OBMM?

Are there any .esp files in the left panel? I would expect several even with most mods converted.

BOSS is not a magic bullet. it does not order all mods and sometimes makes mistakes. However it is a great tool for quickly sorting mods. It places any it does not recognize at the end with a recommendation that you look at each one and decide where it should go yourself.

What mods are left in the left panel of OBMM?

Thanks for your thorough response.

I installed oblivion to c:\games\oblivion

BOSS is installed in my data folder

I have made the mistake of installing a bunch of mods at once :whistling: but I have reinstalled everything from scrach (several times) since then. Now I am going through and adding one mod at a time, then testing - but after 8 mods, I need help ordering them (thus BOSS is required)

However I have only installed C++ 2005 ... I will get C++ 2008, and post how that goes.

Cheers

Your log shows many files as 'Access Denied' that indicates you may not be logged in as an administrator, or you do not have the proper permission to access those files.

If you are an administrator, you need to go into the file attributes and take control of them under your account.

This typically happens when you have more than one account and used the other one to install those files.

From the Win7 help

How do I open a file if I get an access denied message?

If you get a message denying access when you try to open a file, here are some options you can try:

Check the permissions of the file or of the folder the file is saved in. Here's how:

Right-click the file or folder, and then click Properties.

Click the Security tab.

Under Group or user names, click your name to see the permissions you have.

To open a file, you need to have read permission. For more information on permissions, see What are permissions?

Check to see if the file is encrypted. Here's how:

Right-click the file, and then click Properties.

Click the General tab, and then click Advanced.

If the Encrypt contents to secure data check box is selected, you need the certificate that was used to encrypt the file to open it.

You should get the certificate from the person who created the file. For more information, see Import or export certificates and private keys.

So... I was trying to run the batch file as administrator - which did not work (I was assuming that by running the .bat as administrator I would have full access to the files in the folder.

So I right clicked on properties -> then opened the security tab, and gave myself full access to the oblivion/data directory!

Thanks also for your help!
