Mod Conflicts causing crash on startup

I'm a bit late to the game, having just gotten Oblivion a couple weeks ago (GOTY edition, includes Knights of the Nine, Shivering Isles, and latest patch). I'm also obsessive enough to not want to start playing the game until I have all the mods I may want to use in place, so that I don't have to go back later and restart or mess with problems with characters and save games.

So, I spent some time researching various mods and how to use them, put together my list, and set them up. The only problem is that when I launch Oblivion, it briefly goes to a black screen, and then crashes to desktop before even getting so far as the "Bethesda" logo screen.

I've activated and deactivated my mods to find the troublemakers, and it seems that there are three mods, any of which will cause a CTD if activated. These are:

Kvatch Rebuilt 1.1

Quest Award Leveller 2.1.0

Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul COMPLETE 1.33 - seems to only cause a problem when the Harvest Flora option is installed

Any one of these three by itself will cause a CTD, the problem is I don't know which other mods they may be conflicting with. The Kvatch mod is pretty low priority for me, it sounded interesting, but if I can't get it to work, no big deal. I'd like the Quest Award Leveller to work, but it isn't critical. I'd really like to get OOO working though, but it seems that if I have to, I can just run it without Harvest Flora, although it could be a bit of a pain.

Anyway, here is the list of mods I am attempting to use. If anyone knows of an obvious conflict or a potential solution, I'd appreciate some input.

Done.

I used this order, and deactivated the Frostcrag Unofficial Patch as it suggested, but I still get the same CTD on startup. I'll keep looking for solutions, but if anyone has some insight into this, it would be a big help.

Thanks in advance!

General Load-Order Guidelines

Here are the guidelines that I adhere to, personally.

~ Unofficial Oblivon Patch should always be first on the list. The fixes are great, but most aren't essential, so if a mod overwrites them its not a big deal, and the fixes have the potential for screwing up other mods if loaded later.

~ Offical Content (DLC's) should be loaded last, until you complete all quests associated with them (that includes buying all furniture for the houses and whatnot). Once they're complete, they can be safely moved up in the list. This is especially important for Knights of the Nine, which will have some fairly major problems unless loaded last (unless you get the UOP for KotN)

~ Major overhaul mods (OOO, Frans, MMM) should be loaded near the end. That gives you the most complete experience with any of those particular mods. It also lets you carefully choose which other mods to load afterwards... only move mods that you know will conflict and that you want the changes from. For example, I have Improved Soul Gems below OOO because I know that OOO changes the icons of some of the SG's, and ISG needs to be below to show through.

Some people will recommend putting larger mods first, but personally I disagree. There are a number of mods out there that make minor tweaks, and loading after a large mod will end up completely overwriting a chunk from one of the bigger mods because of the way conflicts work in Oblivion (even one minor change will take precedence over the entire record... for example, simply tweaking the speed of a weapon can cause every stat of that weapon to be retained to vanilla levels if loaded later).

So basically, it stacks up like this...

Oblivion.esm

Unofficial Oblivion Patch

<Minor Mods / DLC's (Post-Completion)>

<Major Overhaul Mod/Mods>

<Mods that specifically conflict with overhauls and need to take precedence>

<DLC's (Pre-Completion)>

Note: If using Mayu's Overhaul Mod. I recommend loading it after OOO or MMM

Expanded Load-Order Guidelines

by dev_akm

I would extend this to include:

Oblivion.esm

Unofficial Oblivion Patch

<Weather/Environment/Sound Mods>

<Minor Mods/New Items/Houses/DLC's (Post-Completion)>

<Major Overhaul Mods>

<Mods that specifically conflict with overhauls and need to take precedence>

<DLC's (Pre-Completion)>

<Quests>

<Compatibility Patches/UOMP/Merged Leveled Lists>

And a special-case warning for Knights.esp (Knights of the Nine) -- you may not be able to move it earlier than some other mods (some people have had problems after moving it before OOO, for example).

That's basically the structure I use and I have 140+ mods working well together.

Another way of describing this (posted by DMan77):

....

Oblivion

unoffical patch

Deeper realism mods that add sights and sounds

added content like weapons/items

gameplay changes, like 'must eat and sleep'

The OOO type

the 'new begining' type mod..

I appreciate the response, but I've read these exact guidelines before, and have attempted to adhere to them. I've moved the load order around into several different configurations, none of which have worked, so I'm afraid I'm going to need something a little more specific.

your load orders look nothing like my guide. If you have narrowed it down to those three and two don't really mean anything, then eliminate them.

I apologize for posting that guide,but no where did I see in your original post that you had seen it before. My new crystal ball will arrive any day now. :biggrin:

If you can live without Kvatch and the quest reward leveler then install OOO without the Harvest Flora option, but instead try downloading it from this link: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2037

I've personally found that the HF supplied with OOO seems to be a bit buggy for some reason, but if I manually download and install it separately the issues seem to be resolved.

One other thing I noticed, the load order of your Unofficial Patches is wrong. They are ALWAYS loaded first to allow any mod to take priority over them if needed. I've had a few CTDs before from misplacing those patches by mistake.

Well, I seem to have solved the problems with two of the three mods. Quest Leveller and Harvest Flora had some data files loading for DLC that I apparently don't have. It's been a little confusing to figure out what is and isn't included in the GOTY version.

Now that only leaves the Kvatch Rebuilt stuff, which if it's too much of a headache, I'll probably just leave out.

@dezdimona

I should have clarified. I tried following your guide prior to using BOSS to reorder everything. The order I have listed in my post is not the only order I have tried, it's just the one BOSS recommended. My apologies for the confusion.

@Khet

I'm a little confused. My Unofficial patch is the first esp loaded, and the unofficial patches for SI and Knights of the Nine load immediately after the related content. Are you saying I need to move this content earlier?

Thanks all for the help and suggestions thusfar :thanks:

Sorry, that was my mistake. I didn't catch the BOSS part (it's what I get for looking at forums when I'm half asleep) Ignore my last comment about the UOP load order.

Anyway, in terms of Kvatch rebuilt, aside from ensuring that BOTH the Kvatch rebuilt esp AND esm are active, and you're running the Kvatch Rebuilt OOO Compatibility patch...I'm lost. I use a lot of the same mods as you and don't get any CTDs... Have you gotten a CTD after resolving the first two issues?

Initially, Kvatch would cause a CTD even if the other two mods were completely deactivated. However, it now seems to be working. The only thing I can think of that changed is that at one point, I completely deactivated all of the mods and reactivated them. Maybe something about the order I activated them made a difference? Now I wish I could remember how I did it!

Anyway, thanks for the help.
