geck troubles

Having trouble getting the files created with GECK into the data folder?

Or having trouble getting more files to create with in the GECK?

I know you have to unpack any stuff you wana use from the .BSA files

or get permission to use other players stuff, I think that's only if you wana distribute it though.

Like say I wana make a assault rifle that shoots 10mm bullets

I'd have to change a lot of stuff, but most important would be to change

the shell case that gets thrown out when you shoot. A 10mm assault rifle

won't kick out a 7.62 shell case, it would be a 10mm shell case.

What you would have to do is use a program called FOMM (fallout mod manager)

to extract the 10mm shell case from the fallout 3 meshes.bsa, then place it in the data folder

so you could select it as the shell case for the weapon in GECK

So it's kind of like there isn't much to work with when you get started in GECK.

There's plenty of stuff actually inside the geck to work with yeah but not in terms of

creating new stuff.

Although it's probably not the problem you are having, you need to have FOMM just to

unpack stuff to make stuff out of in the GECK. It takes a while to get a bunch of stuff in there.

I would say an I'm just guessing.

You open geck, select to load, pick fallout.esm

Then you create what you wanted to work on.

Then you save it with a cool name like myfirstmod as an example

The next day you wana work on it some more

You open GECK, load, select fallout.esm, and then select myfirstmod.esp

only this time an each time after you set it to active (active as in it's what you want saved)

With it set to active all the work you did yesterday, along with all the work your about to do will get saved

You don't save as, after this point, just click save

if you were to make myfirstmod.esp then come back the next day an load fallout.esm then load myfirstmod.esp

and not set it to active, when you save it won't let you so you have to save as, which only saves what you did today

plus if you did somehow get it to save over the myfirstmod.esp it would overwrite it an you would lose everything you did

yesterday.

I hear people saying you need to run GECK as a Admin

You should check to make sure your data file isn't set to read only

right click the bethesda folder, select propertys then make sure read only is unchecked

if it is checked, uncheck it then apply that to each folder an subfolder, making the whole thing not read only

You should save your created .esp files inside the data folder

I hope this helpped, if not post some more information

I'm not getting a good idea what you're having problems with.

Don't worry about it though. It's really tough to start learning how to do this stuff.
