Fallout 3 Stops working.

Sometimes when entering or exiting VATS Fallout 3 will crash and I will get a "Fallout 3 Stopped working" message. I have experienced the crash with and without mods. Currently I am running it without any DLC.

I am using a computer and am running windows Vista, also I'm using an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260 if you need further information just ask. Any help would be much appreciated.

Geez, Vista is a pain...

I use XP... :/

I would start by looking into the tweeks the vista users make

like moving the install location outside of program files in it's own folder

running it as a admin, running it in Win XP SP3 mode, ect

I'd use patch 1.5 plus master update from FO3edit

or patch 1.6 plus master update

or just patch 1.6

I'd follow the tweek guide for game settings

http://www.tweakguides.com/Fallout3_8.html

Personally I'd set fallout's AA and AF settings to off for perfomance

then make your grapics card Force whatever AA an AF settings you want

besdies that follow the tweekguide somewhat, it's kind of outdated

but still good...

hmmm

You should probably update your drivers, because we always forget to

could cause your problem, idk.

Got any modz yet? :D

Done any patches yet?

I'd ignore patches 1.0.15 1.0.35 1.4 and the fakepatched path

Most of the good parts about fake patch can be fixed with mods

Like VATS-MCE I think, changes VATS an allows grenade shooting LOLZ

Plus Fake patch being a hack/workaround, Depends on what you want though I guess.

You might have to check your install file to make sure it's not set to read only.

Can't think of anything else right now.

I'll check all of those issues out. Thank you for your time.

I've been trying out a couple mods and just ignoring any crashes/not using VATS outside, which is how it mainly crashes. Some are pretty fun, I have Anchorage/The Pitt DLC but I haven't really installed it yet, not until I get the game working properly..

I've used the official patch on the site to see if it fixed anything or if I noticed any changes, and I didn't.

I was able to shoot the grenades on my PS3 version, is the PC version different in that you can't?

Yes, you can shoot grenades in the PC version, though that is via VATS unless you're somehow a lucky shot outside of it. As for your VATS issue, your best option is to perhaps lower your settings and update your video drivers, see if that helps..

PS;

Vista isn't the cause.

The dark sith has spoken.

I didn't say Vista was the root cause

I said that Vista users have to follow different rules.

Besides he's got a GTX 260 behemoth card

He could max out the settings add both of MMM's increased spawns

and use a driver from the 1990's an it would still work.

lolz

Niether one of us should have said anything about this problem until we

pointed to the pinned topics.

You see them at the top of the boards.

There's sort of problem with grenade shooting in VATS.

Patches past 1.0.15 namely 1.0.35 and 1.4

So folks came up with the Fake patch hack to keep the VATS settings in 1.0.15

then sort of working around with a hack to make the .exe look like it was patch 1.5 or 1.6 or 1.4 even

so they could also use DLC's or something.

It's sort of silly though.

I never even missed not being able to VATS mid air grenades with a chance to hit

But I stumbled upon a fix, Either it's patch 1.5 or FO3edit's master update

or the mods VATS-MCE, VATS at longer distance.

I noticed the other day I could target thrown weapons with a chance to hit.

I suspect it's from VATS-MCE which changes the chance to hit, and bases it

off your weapons skill rather than distance to target.

Which is why there's really only patch 1.5 an 1.6 for users with single grapics cards or SLI/crossfire

I think it's up to you if you wana use FO3edits master update, it's great though.

Get FOMM fallout mod manager, right click the load list an copy to clipboard then paste it here

Get FOSE an Then FOMM will launch FOSE rather than the fallout.exe default launcher

So yeah if you're using mods then we need to look at what you are using

If you don't have mods yet then we should focus on the settings, install, an utilitys you're using
