Rataska
Ok in January I was forced to rebuild my computer due to a hard drive failure. Ever sense then I have tried to reinstall skyrim and have failed miserably at doing so. It requires "steam" to get most of its information and "Steam" is telling me I have no internet connection... I'm on the internet right now so WTF? I have lost count of the failure messages but it is the same every time; steam cannot talk to the steam servers. "Steam" basically told me to suck it up and talk to Beth. Beth told me it was a Comcast issue. Comcast tells me everything is set up correctly. Steam is clearly the problem. Can I install the game by bypassing their stupid servers? How would I even do that?Any advice is appreciated. Would like to get my $50 game functioning again. Right now its a paperweight. Lord Garon
Are you on a wireless internet connection? I had to configure port forwarding through my old COMCAST wireless router to get Steam online. I only found that issue after running a long cat5 cable to my computer from the router and finding it worked then. Google for something like: Steam games wireless port forwarding EDIT: found this link Everything else worked, just not Steam. Might check your firewall settings, as well. Lord Garon
Okay. I did have one other issue connecting to Steam that I remember and a DNS flush (for some reason) allowed me to connect. If you don't trust me (and you shouldn't trust random Internet advice), look up the ipconfig command first. You can mess up your adapter settings by improper use of the ipconfig command. You have been warned. Open a cmd prompt (Start-->type cmd.exe in the search box-->right-click on cmd.exe and run as administrator)In the command prompt, enter: ipconfig /flushdns Hit enter. That will flush your DNS cache. Your machine will reacquire your nameservers shortly. Try to get Steam again. You could also try the old standby Steam fix: delete (or rename) the Steam\ClientRegistry.blob file. Make sure nothing Steam is running: exit Steam and the Steam Client from the hidden icons on your taskbar. Delete or rename Steam\ClientRegistry.blob. Fire up Steam. YOU WILL HAVE TO LOG IN TO YOUR ACCOUNT: IF YOU'RE USING ANOTHER ACCOUNT, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE USERNAME AND PASSWORD. Rataska
Thanks for the input. Both of those suggestions failed.Any other tricks you might suggest?
Lord Garon
Well, two Steam things left, then its network troubleshooting which I don't feel qualified to help with. 1. You can try the old Steam Support fix: in your Steam directory, delete everything EXCEPT Steam.exe AND the SteamApps folder. Then try Steam again. That was their "standard reply" for a long time, but that was a while back. Not sure if they still say that for connection issues. 2. Remove/re-install Steam. Not much to lose, unless you have other games installed in the SteamApps folder. I'm assuming you've looked over the stuff here and have tried connecting with your anti-virus/spyware turned off. Rataska
Thanks again for the reply. I have actually tried both of those suggestions previously. I even tried to direct download the game from the steam site yesterday which is actually the furthest into the process I have gotten, but when steam asked for my password to start the download even though I was on their site I ended up with the same error.I've got one of my relatives working on the issue. He thinks he figured it out and will be by sometime tomorrow to implement his fix. whatever that may be.
xavenger
Have you tried deleting ClientRegistry.blob? That usually fix it for me when this type of problem occurs. Don't worry as it is safe to delete; it just contains old data about your profile like games and stuff so you can access them locally. Once you login it will make a new/updated one. EDIT: Also make sure you back up the old one by renaming it to "ClientregistryOLD.blob" Edited February 15, 2014 by xavenger
Rataska
As steam to this date has failed to even fully install That file does not exist. I had looked for it previously. Thank you for trying.
