Noob having some trouble with master files

I'm trying to modify an existing mod. I am, you see, an obsessive-compulsive alchemist (if I see an ingredient plant, I must harvest it), and I downloaded Gather Ye Rosebuds to make it easier to grab tons of ingredients without wearing out my action button (and my patience). However, I discovered the gathering spells have a magicka cost. My Atronach character does not much like the idea of wasting precious magicka just to avoid the hassle of picking up ingredients.

 

So I opened the esp in TESCS, removed the magicka cost, saved, and what got saved was a tiny 627 byte file with just my modifications inside. I tried loading it after Gather Ye Rosebuds in the hope it'd just overwrite the original mod's settings, but it doesn't work. I understand this is because I need to set the original as a master file in my mod; however, I can't for the life of me figure out how to do that.

load the mods esp as the active file in the CS and save it.

you would be modding the original esp instead of creating a new one.

and back it up be fore you mod anything to make sure you can fix any mistakes.
