trying to find a step by step write up on how to get started

so ive spent the last hour or so trying to find a posting that explains to brand new modders in easy to understand language how to get started. a post i made asking for help just got smacked down by the modder basically telling me to get it right.

Im looking to get started but all the talk using abbreviations is very hard to understand for newbs. im not totally dumb when it comes to computers but diving into the deep end just doesnt work.

i hope someone can point me to a begginers section or some helpful posts. so far i downloaded the nmm and tried adding mods but of the 13 i downloaded (10 of which are just graphic upgrade ones 1 quest and 2 new gun mods) the only 2 that sort of work are the 2 new guns and both of them have issues of half the screen being blacked out when i zoom in the rest have not worked at all. each of the mods are in the most downloaded section and from the comments most others have the running fine.

im confused as to what the other stuff like fose or fomm is or if theres something else i have to do to get stuff running. (read a post said something about unauthorised file needs to be downloaded before nmm but it was very confusing)

im looking at modding a fair few games fallouts series, elder scrolls series, mount and blade, dnd stuff etc

any help would be appreciated i feel dumb being such a noob but gotta start somewhere

This is the general Nexus site-wide "Questions, suggestion and feedback" forum.

The place to post this sort of query is in the "Mod Talk" forum for whichever game you're interested in.

I was all set to point you to this article: Using Dragon Age Mods for Dummies, until I read your last sentence. Since the Nexus now supports about 70 different games, the answer for any one (or any one series) is probably useless for any others...

Lastly, virtually every mod author provides installation instructions for their mods. Read them. Heed them. You really don't need to, and as a new mod user probably shouldn't, use a mod manager to get your mods working. Once you have the basics understood, then a manager makes using lots of mods much easier! (I mean scores. I currently play with 60 installed for DA:O. )

The problem with using a mod manager, any mod manager, before you have an understanding of how the mods for a particular game are supposed to be installed and operate is that when things don't work... you have no idea why.

You can't even describe what's going on because you don't know what's supposed to be going on.

Again, mod authors themselves are your best source of how their works should be handled.

just for the record i was under the impression of the mod manager working the same way the steam library worked. where all u do is choose the mod u want and it automatically does everything for u. no fooling around with files or anything yourself just click and add. I am glad to see this method coz i was looking for a better method of having more control than just click and add. this way should b able to get mods working that dont work thru steam library. my skyrim currently has about 50 mods on it from steam but its getting harder to get new ones to mesh with the others
