Malchik
What surprises me more is that it is so unusual in Germany. There have been women in politics for centuries and most European nations have had a woman at the helm at some point. I still await that bastion of equality the USA to appoint a female president however! (Ideally a blind, black, lesbian, single-mother.)
marcel adam
OK,dont overdo it.I mean a singled and black is no problem. But lesbian and blind.I mean a Kanzlers got to be a Vorbild(got damn my English is hanging),Idol or something. She or he got to be someone your looking up for. And of course this is really progressive, its not the Woman but the Person that shouldnt lead our Country.I mean shes got some issues and not in the positiv way.Or what do you thing about a Human that cant laugh. Darnoc
I think it is good that Germany has finally a woman as head of state, but not that particullary woman, since I simply don't agree with her politics. I will always be against coservatives and right-wingies.
VaanicOne
well, when we had a Woman prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, it was a complete success. This Ms. Merkel will do fine, I'm sure.

Hmmmm.

Argoren
Some two or three weeks ago I watched a report about the election in Germany. The question was how people felt about a possible chancellor Merkel. Only foreign politicians were asked – men and women, mostly in high positions all over Europe and beyond. All the answers were very chary, polite and evenhanded. But you couldn’t resist the feeling that they all talked about Germany as if they were talking about a third-world country, which just established its first democratic system. And I had to admit “damn, they right, how embarrassing”! What is still so special about a female in a leading position? Evidently she is a smart and intelligent woman. I do not agree with her political intentions in many ways. But at least I expect her to be more honest than most other politicians I can think of. She announced unpopular (unfortunately necessary) changes long before the final election and shortly before it. She did this more than once. This could be fatuousness or it could be fidelity. I’m pretty sure she knew about the impact. Then she encloses herself with a whole bunch of women who seem to be very promising, smart and competent. It must be frightening to all those conservative men, not only one female boss, but appently a whole female invasion. :D I’d say we should give her a change like every other chancellor got one. She can hadly do worse than her predecessors anyway. And in fact those bumptious and fractious gentlemen in both governing parties seem more precarious to me.
