I need help troubleshooting this crash

Recommended Posts

I've tried isolating the problem of my crashes, and found even if I only have fallout3.esm ticked, it still crashes as soon as I press "continue" or try to load a different savegame.

Again, I cannot load or continue my game, this just happened suddenly one day and then I had decided to clean up my mod list, thinking that the mods were the source of the problem. I then tried isolating the problem, and found that they aren't. Even only with Fallout3.esm ticked, it still crashes after the loading screen when I select continue or load. Any additional things I have installed are the unofficial fallout 3 patch (version 3808) and the razor1911 patch + crack v1.1.0.35. Other than that, there is nothing else that I know of. It just somehow crashes to the desktop, without any warnings or errors popping up, it just crashes.

I've spent the past 5 hours trying to look for the problem and I've honestly got no idea left. I've tried uninstalling and installing, then reinstalling mods that I've had, but they turned out not to be the problem.

I'm just wondering if theres anybody whose had this problem and somehow fixed it. And just in case, I'll give the list from my fomm for those of you who are still thinking a mod may be causing this.

I would really appreciate anybody's help, because at this point, I have no choice but to give up on the game, even after so many hours of time put into it.. (which is honestly, like a gigantic foot kicking me right in the nutsack, not to mention I'll have nothing left to do for the rest of my summer.)

Thanks to everybody whose willing to help!

You should check out the pinned threads, installing mods with DLC's

and also put crashing with DLC's in your posts title

You use a patch called crack, lolz an wonder what's causing your problems.

1.0.35 might as well be deleted, even if it comes with free crack rock

version 1.0 works better than 1.0.35 hahahahaha

So yeah get a better patch

Use 1.5 plus FO3edit's master update

Then in a couple of months we can update to 1.6 or 1.7

Fellout is not put together, you've got one 1/4 of the way then the other 2/3 of the way

then yet another fellout compatability patch down near the bottom

MMM is split up, the compatibliy patches for it are last rather than being after the MMM.esp

you should have all the MMM stuff very last, then fellout or other weather mods right before MMM

Owned is built into FOOK, you don't have many calibr guns

Pretty much your load order is a total mess, like your room is...

what does your mom make mods now, clean that stuff up .

Got tired of working on it, I'm about ready to make another.

But you kind of see how things get grouped together.

Sorry about the lack of order, but I just never really understood on how to organize everything.

I just sort of relied on the mod sorter, and it always seemed to work out fine until now.

(as for my room, yes it is a pretty messy, but at least I'm capable of finding everything quickly! haha)

Thanks for the quick reply and the awesome help though, I'll definitely try removing some of the crack patches and downloading some up-to-date stuff.

Could you point me in the right direction with some of the patches that I need?

By the way, you have an amazing amount of mods, its a wonder!!

I could never obtain so many mods without finding and trying to fix the problems, which is why I got rid of so many only recently because they caused frequent crashes.

I'll appreciate any more suggestions that anybody is willing to make, though! Criticism is also welcome because honestly, I need some to set my sights straight. Honestly, I've never really been on the forums until now, so that makes me a forum newb, and as the person above has proved to me, a true messy clutz that can't organize any mods, let alone work the game!

I'll make an edit as soon as I can here, and try to fix up the problems I already have, but if it doesn't work I'll be sure to report back to these forums!

EDIT:::

I downloaded the FO3Edit, but I have no idea what it is supposed to do.

I also came to realize that my mods should not be a problem, because they have been working fine and even if I turn them all off, FO3 will still crash after the loading screens when I press continue or load.

I will try other things, but any recommendations will be greatly appreciated.

Don't look at meh!

My name is Pitt and I don't know S***!

LOLZ I have to put something funny in there or it's total boredom.

It took another few hours to move all that stuff in the load order.

Maybe a week to build it. I just deleted everything a few days ago.

Even my system files, then formated both hard drives.

So I'm making another build, which is how you learn, so don't be afraid to start over.

This is like the 4th or 5th time I've done it.

I wouldn't use auto installers for mods, do it manually, follow each folder down

and look at what it may or may not replace. Also read the read me's for conflicts.

Never autosave or quicksave, NEVAH!

it leads to coruption, always hit Esc then create a new save

keep 20 or so saves around, because it can go corupt an then crash

an hour later, without you even knowing.

Which could be the root cause of your problem, a corupted save game.

Also I wouldn't use Auto Mod sorter, The only way to be sure is to read the read me's.

And read on the forums.

ums you have DLC's so I would just log into Games for windows live an let it update it.

You'll probably have to delete all your saves, but they might be corupted anyway.

FO3edit's master update ability, is sort of meant for patch 1.5, but

patch 1.6 an 1.7 don't really fix bugs, they just add stuff...

So it stands to reason FO3edit would still yeild that nice low chance of crash

while also allowing some mods that normally wouldn't work together, to not conflict

and work great.

What you do is find the FO3edit.exe, right click it and create a short cut

right click the short cut, click properties, see the target line

You want to add -masterupdate, but there is a space after the " "

so it looks something like "C:/bethesdasoftpoop\fallout3\FO3edit.exe" -masterupdate

From now on this is your master update shortcut, which you should put in a folder

named master update, on the desktop, inside the master update folder

you also put a folder named master restore, inside that master restore folder

you go back to the FO3edit.exe and create another short cut, which you place

in the master restore folder, right click the short cut, click properties,

Add -masterrestore to the target line.

You put them in folders so you don't mix them up with your FO3edit

it's a different program, and you don't wana click one when you wanted the other.

So after you got a almost 100% correct load order, double click the master update

shortcut, it will run an display tons of text, any errors will be displayed as well

and the program will halt at a error.

If you get an error, there are a couple of choices,

1. ask the mod that caused the error to fix it

2. Open the mod that caused the error with GECK an set it to active

Then hope the GECK prompts to auto fix it.

Run master update again, if it still causes a error then delete the mod uninstall it

Run the master update again until it finishes without error

At which point clicking the X to close the window finalizes the process

From there you have to run master update again each time you change the load order

or add in new mods. Also look into FO3edit's read me.

To remove the master update all you do is run the masterrestore shortcut you made

So you see there is no risk...

FO3edit does many many things, for one you can make quick edit's to mods, you can trace down errors,

master update, master restore, and tons of stuff we don't understand how to use yet, just like FOMM

Which brings me to you should have FOMM fallout mod manager, FOSE Fallout script extender, GECK and the GECK update,

Pearl Jam on pandora radio, FO3edit, and a good patch for the game, with the game installed in it's own folder

Like C:\bethesda softworks

Can't think of anything else...

I finally decided to get rid of everything and start over a day ago, I just forgot to post on the forums because I was still dealing with a few crashes here and there.

I actually sort kinda (haha yeah i'm not sure) get it by now, and I've been doing it manually instead of purely relying on what mod sorter has to offer, and it's been going great!

I've also started to save by pressing Esc first, and its turned out great! I've actually started a completely new game, and at least now I'm sure to have something to do. Thanks for the help, everybody, but apart from the occasion CTD, which I can live with because it only happens once every few hours (and again, I am making constant saves), so I guess my problem is solved! It took me a while but I think I've got the gist of it. Thanks for all the commenting, good or bad! :thanks:

Install practice helps

good install, good patch, then install mods manually really clean, good load order, then master update it

tweek the settings, an never autosave an you cut the crashes down a whole whole lot

But hey plain old version 1.0 fallout will crash with or without mods, maybe even

version 1.7 with no mods at all will crash, it just does it

Shoot man I had a pistol that was missing a tiny animated part, and it caused a crash

One little piece crashed the whole freaking game

Shoot yeah man

there's mods to disable autosave

I figure just turning them off works though

save the space for more modz

Also don't use mods that just change stuff in the fallout.ini notepad file

follow the tweek guide an read it to make the choices you think will best help yah

You are a goddam genius! Whether you figured this out yourself or not I am indebted to you, but you'll have to settle for kudos cuz I'm too cheap to pay.

I just did what you suggested and played a quick run through of the three main quests in my mod Return to Shady Sands and saw not one lost AI package, no funky weapon carries and no CTDs. Thinking back now they all started after walking through doors, fast travelling, resting... all the autosave enablers.

I have to post this for people having those problems with my mod. I think there are a lot of us noobs that don't know this.

I shall be forever in your debt, wanderer!
