7thsealord
Shouldn't think about any of this TOO closely, just makes your head hurt. Look at the technology. I mean, REALLY look at it. Pre-War is predominantly 1950s culture - the clothing, the architecture, the billboards, etc., etc., etc.. But I do not buy that it was only the "older" stuff that preserved better. There are self-contained robots in abundance, various flavours of practical energy weapons and power armour, and so on. Think also about the amazing longevity of most of this stuff - ammunition as "we" know it does not improve with age, nor batteries (in which category I include Energy Cells, MF Cells, etc.), nor preserved foodstuffs. Yet in FO3 there are vast quantities of ALL of these things, all none the worse for a century-plus of neglect, mostly in less than ideal situations. Since when has anyone found a cache full of "duds"? The DC area is blasted to c##p, yet one can still get running water in most places. There are medicines that will instantly and flawlessly heal just about any injury that doesn't kill you outright (obviously with no 'Use-By' dates either). Other medicines (also lacking Use-By dates) that will instantly remove all but the absolute worst radiation poisoning. All are fool-proof as well - Medical skill makes them more effective, but there are no worries about what these medicines might do in unskilled hands. ... A-N-D automated systems that one can trust to style hair and/or perform plastic surgery without fear of them going .... creative. However you slice it, FO3 is a fantasy world. The most to be tried for is INTERNAL consistency (in which there are still loads of problems, I totally agree).
