Torch to stone

Reason why:

I have a nice problem. Low-spec computer and the evaluation copy of Windows 7. Before anyone tells me to change, I should let you all know that doing so is impossible. I can't revert to Vista (I've tried) and I don't have the money for a new computer, nor do I have another working computer that I'm allowed or able to put Oblivion on.

Every time I approach torches - usually takes more than one, but then we all know that torches often come in swarms - my computer starts to gum up. There is one mod that's supposed to improve FPS but it also brightens the torches, something I absolutely do not want and it probably wouldn't work in the first place.

And now the idea:-

So...I'm sure it wouldn't be that hard. Replace ALL torches in the game with, perhaps, Welkynd Stones on sticks or in cages. It's more magical anyway, no? Nothing that actually moves, please. The whole purpose of this idea is to remove all movement from all light-sources so they'll stop gumming up the computer.

And no, I'm not a modder, unfortunately. >_> Not yet, at least.

Googled it just now. No luck (note that I'm on dialup internet...AKA "fake internet" so running around screaming like a loon on Google ain't happening).

Bottom line, all torches must be changed. X_X

Eh, thanks...but I'm gonna pass on this one. I'm looking for a replacement, not an upgrade. X_X If I had a better computer that wasn't skipping and stuttering from the flames, I'd go for it in an instant, but until that happens, I'm sticking with the model replacement idea.

Also, the candles need to be replaced too, maybe by Petty Soul Gems or something.

Somehow I don't think this issue has anything to do with windows, 7 or otherwise. Technically speaking, torches are actually a whole lot less complex than most other objects in the game. There has to be something else going on here or else your issues would not be limited to just torches, but also other things, like fire statics, or flickering lights. It it were happening with other objects, it would be easier to figure out what the possible cause might be.

Most of the torches placed in game are actually 2 components, a torch object which has the flame, and a light object which creates the light and flickering. The easiest way to test this would be to find a place where there are many of these dummy torches setup, and just disable the static element using console to see if it improves anything. There are quite a few arrangements of these torches in wellspring cave, 3 of them in one spot right near the entrance.

Without knowing what the actual issue is here, there really isn't any way to determine what might work from what does not. Would also help to know what kind of hardware you are using, what sort of visual options you have, and what sort of performance it is that you are expecting from that hardware. If you're using a dated system, you can't really expect to have a constant 40+ frames a second, with any software.

Actually, guys...it's ALL fire. Those foggy/dusty spots in certain dungeon hallways seem to slow down too, but ALL fire (candles and torches; I haven't encountered any other fire sources) in the game slows it down.

Also, the Eva (evaluation copy/release candidate) of Windows 7 performs more slowly in general than both the Win7 beta AND Windows Vista Home Premium on this computer. EVERYTHING I do is slower, especially Morrowind and Oblivion, neither of which had any (or many) stuttering issues before Microsoft forced the Eva on me as long as I kept things simple (visual range down a bit, but land viewing distance seemed to be fine as long as I didn't turn on View Distant Lands, which glitched up and made fake ground....which nearly got me killed once).

It's a simple problem with a simple fix.

Problem: Torches, candles, and other sources of moving fire take up more processing power. Going near numerous torches slows the computer down more. Going near one might be okay, though. Rain has the same effect, though the degree seems random (sometimes runs smoothly with multiple torches in the vicinity). The Mages Guild in Chorrol is by far the worst I've experienced and the first/main room is permanently slow due to the masses of candles.

Solution: Get rid of the flames. Replace torches with Welkynd stones (as an example. They're rather attractive anyway) and the candles with...what...glow-sticks, perhaps?

XD I hear that, Rets. Hope you noticed my sig, BTW. Punk to the bone. *loads up on glowsticks* =3 - Yes, I know that Punks are not inherently rave-goers.
