2k vs 4k textures. Need opinions :)

Hey all!

Currently in the process of reinstalling Skyrim and adding all my mods. But I was just abit curious on peoples opinions on 2k vs 4k textures. Are the differences really noticeable when you are just playing the game like normal and not taking screenshots etc? And is the extra quality worth the extra pressure it puts on the system?

Trying to decide if I should just leave the 4k versions of the texture mods be or go with it.

First of all, I recall that Skyrim mirrors texture data in RAM. Due to the infamous 3.1 GB RAM limitation, RAM is probably the limiting factor here, not VRAM. This is certainly the case for me, and I've only got 3 GB VRAM.

Secondly, I'd seriously take a look at whether the 4K texture actually has any details that the 2K texture lacks. Are there really any details smaller than one pixel of a 2K resolution monitor, which would make 4K texture useful? Even if this is so, are you going to be close enough to see it? Where is the texture going to be used? In some parts of the game, textures are stretched to cover objects that are too large for them, e.g. a 512x512 texture for a giant boulder. Here, 4K might be better than 2K; if it's going to be a small pebble, obviously not.

Personally I just decided to use my resources for gameplay enhancement mods and dump texture packs altogether. Besides, Sands of Time doesn't work well with 2k textures, what more 4k. I just used the Hi-Res Optimized pack and used the option to replaced only the textures smaller than 1k. It would depend on what your mod build would be then, and your priority. Would you have lots of mods that demand resources, making gameplay enhancements? Or you would you rather have your game looking good, but almost vanilla gameplay experience?
