Two Problems. Gibberish Quest talk and loud booming noise

First one should be easier. I installed some new mods (after all others worked fine) and suddenly one quest went into gibberish mode. I have no idea which quest that could be. The map marker points to the Shivering Isles door in Niben Bay, but i still have the "A mysterious door" quest in english, so i am not sure thats it. I removed all addons i installed, but the gibberish did not go away. I think this first happened after i installed the Unofficial Shivering Isles Patch, but removing it did not cure the problem. I attached three screens that may help?

Second problem is that now i get a booming sound every second or so, like something huge walking. Sounds a little like the noise the Oblivion doors make. Pulsating like a heart beat. It is there wherever i go. This happened after i UNINSTALLED some mods in search for the above first culprit.

If anybody can help me out what might cause that? Is there any other quest except for shivering isles that point to that island? And the booming drives me crazy.

Hopefully somebody can help, because with all the mods it would be insane to install a fresh version ;)

It looks like you may have installed a non English language version of the patch. The booming is caused by a mod. I have seen that problem before, but right now I can't remember the fix. Hopefully someone else will be able to help on that one.

If it is the patch, you may have to reinstall to fix it as the patch changes stuff in the Oblivion.exe. And there is no roll back for it. Be sure you install the proper language versions - all are available free at the official Bethesda site. http://www.elderscrolls.com/downloads/updates_patches.htm

Many thanks for the quick answer. I did install definitely the right version of the SI Patch (US, like my version of Oblivion.) I even downloaded it freshly from the Bethesda site, just to be on the safe side... It also was not a problem until a few days ago, so i assume it must be caused by some other mod i installed later. I am guessing maybe the the beautiful people 2ch edition left over some residue text and decided to show it's "ugly" side after i disabled it (because of the googly eyes problems).... it might also have been some other japanese mod i tried out and deactivated. Strange though that problem only appeared after i deacivated most mods. I mean i had the odd door renamed and some text (nothing my limited japanese could not handle though, i could have lived with that, if only i had found a way to actually display the japanese....)

Ah well, i uninstalled and reinstalled it twice since, trying to find out a safe order of installing the mods that i want. I will make a huge circle around Beautiful People, which really messed up two attempts (both the japanese and the english version just take command of way too much. Many mods have small dependencies on the stuff that BP controls and thats a no-no.)

The booming though really is a puzzle. What settings could cause such a noise to appear and stay constantly? Maybe knowing what kind of mod causes such would narrow down the search in my mod folder (and i admit freely, my eyes were much bigger than my ability to devour. I just recently rediscovered Oblivion and found this modders resource wet dream ;)

Anyway, thank you for your ideas. Lets try to find out what it is, so we can help others. (I have since reinstalled Oblivion and i THINK i found a somewhat safe compromise. Lets see what happens when i add all the CM Companions back in ;)

The booming sound you have sounds like the Scripted Spell Effect introduced by some mods. You either need to find out which mod you recently added that's doing it or get a Script Effect Silencer mod.

However, there used to be one at Tesnexus and PES but I did a quick search and couldn't find it at either site. I can't do much searching at the moment, I'm over my download limit so am at dial up speed for the next few days. :wallbash:

There is Duke Patrick's Script Effect Silencer, but that pertains only to his mod from reading the description.

Scripted spells in older mods used to do this so you may need to adjust your load order or do some detective work to find out which mod is doing it. It should have stopped if you removed the mod so it has to be one you still have.

Perhaps posting your load order for someone to check would help.

Firstly many thanks to Dezdimona and Maigrets.

Yeah i left BP away now, it is way too much trouble if you plan to add anything else after it (usually in the form of googly eyes, but also more nasty sideeffects). Rather just add the textures and meshes one by one and by hand if and when you need them.

I gave up because the booming drove me crazy. So i reinstalled Oblivion from the start (actually twice because BP killed my second install as well. It is also almost impossible to remove once it has taken over the meshes... Now i learned ;)

I still have a copy of my old Oblivion with the problems just in case someone found a solution.

I'll see if i can get a load order (but be prepared i do indeed use a LOT of mods... just too many fun ones available to say no to). I did disable almost all mods to see what could cause it (only the "standard" race mods were active, like rens and necs). But the sounds still went on. Anyway, as i said i moved on and will be a little more careful (usually copy my whole data folder before adding a new mod ;)

  • 1 month later...

I also had the strange booming sound in my game.

I have no idea why, but after running BOSS (and rebuilding my bashed patch) the problem is GONE.

Given my experience with this problem, I belive that its just a load order conflict.

Give BOSS a try, its the best load order software money can't buy, and I'm confident it will stop the boom!

Hello heavywaters,

thanks for the hint. i had since moved on to two more installations and for a few weeks now everything is running fine. It was quite the learning process, but i am not confident i can pretty much handle any problem Oblivion and it's modders can throw at me ;) After three complete translations from japanese and russian (intrinsically learning how to use tes4edit and the CS during the process) and understanding how exactly Oblivion resolves conflict (again Tes4Edit, which is by my money the best programme ever for modders) it was quite a journey.

I do not use wyre bash (did it once on the second try, screwed everything up), but with tes4edit and OBMM i am now able to solve everything. Even make my own combine mods (usually, all clothes in one, all armors in one, etc...).

I found out that the culprit back then was Vows and Covenants. It was one mod i did not add to the other installations, but once i did on my last attempt, i immediately had the booms and such back. I checked for conflicts in tes4edit, found a few that may cause spell effect scripts, found a mod that put those back into order, loaded it after Vows and Covenants (Supreme Magicka), et voila, Booms gone. Can confirm by moving Supreme Magicka before V&C again. Booms back. So i simply too out the offending entries in V&C and now it does not matter anymore :)

So essentially it WAS a load order problem, although i suspect the Booms did not stem from V&C alone, but rather an unlucky combination of mods and load order. I also suspect some other very unclean mods may have played a role. I truly recommend to use tes4edit on any single new mod and first clean them before trying them out.

Thanks for all the help, this is why i love the modders community, we can all learn from our mistakes and successes :)

Glad to hear you solved the problem.

One problem with using a bashed patch is: if you change your load order in ANY way, you have to rebuild the patch or your game will crash and do all kinds of strange things. My 80+ mods run smooth and stable now that the load order is optimised. I also use Tes4Edit to insure a clean install on new mods.

I am guessing what i am doing is kinda like a bashed patch only by hand (putting everything new into one mod instead of leaving them all separate). However when i do it by hand i can actually see any problems that could crop up, while using wyre bash just overwrites things. Sometimes conflicts are wanted though. At least that is what happened the only time i used wyre.

But if the method works for you, why change it, right? I am actually thinking i can do it faster just with Tes4edit than i could with wyre ;) Also i can quickly correct any language problems or even move containers, or NPCs around. Heck i completely overhauled all the races to my own tastes just by using tes4edit (gave them different hairs, eyes, textures, etc...)

Anyway. Thanks for helping, it is much appreciated.
