Inspired by seeing the new breed of Super Follower mods like Inigo, Anduniel, Valfar and Hoth, and by Rich Stanton from Eurogamer's description of the NPCs in Dark Souls "NPCs appear and disappear because of different and oblique triggers, creating a convincing illusion that they are all on their own little quests in this world, and each has their own arc."

 

I'd love to see some more characters that are initially ambivalent or even moderately hostile to the the player, and that pursue their own quests perhaps.

Like a character that you initially meet in a pub, and can say "follow me for adventure!", and they reply dismissively claiming they are onto something more rewarding than your offer of 500 Septims. Then the next time you meet them they could be in a battle with a random creature and ask for your help.. but its up to you. If they survive you might next see them returning somewhere with loot in hand and upgraded weapons and armour depending on whether they have been killing bandits, performing D.B / thieves guild quests.

Eventually you would either find their body at one of your later quest locations, have to fight them if they dislike or are competing over the same thing, or even be able to join up together.
