Mod Download

I seem to be having some trouble installing mods.

The problem I have is when I download the MOD(s) and put them into the Data folder, and run oblivion they don't show up in the "Data Files" for me to check.

I've downloaded OBMM, turned off the UAC, and even placed it in another area rather then the "Program Files" but I end up with the same problem.

With OBMM, it shows up on the list but when I activate it and everything it just creates the blue box that lets me know its "activated" and does not appear on the left frame. I run Oblivion to see if maybe it just doesn't show up in the left frame, and check the "Data Files" but it still doesn't show.

I've uninstalled Oblivion, reinstalled and even reinstalled MOD(s) to see if that would work. Yet, no matter what I try it does not show up in the Data Files folder.

I've looked up several things regarding running on windows Vista, but even following the instructions step by step it still does not show in the folder like it should or does for most.

I don't have a Meshes folder, and I've created one thinking that it may help. I've deleted it, everything remains unchanged.

Can anyone help me with this?

Thanks. :thanks:

Okay-- first we have to stop right there.

What do you mean when you say you "put them in the Data folder?" What, specifically, do you put in the Data folder? The files that make up the mod or just the file (most often a 7z) in which the mod is packaged?

Sorry, I'm not really good with terms, I usually just follow guides step-by-step. So if my answer doesn't make sense or doesn't answer your question, I apologize.

I'm guessing though what you mean is if I've unzipped the file(?), in which I have extracted and placed the file into the Data folder. I've also done it separately by extracting and then placing it in. I've also extracted and placed Textures for MOD(s) in the texture folder and the same in their correct folders.

I hope that makes sense or answers what you were asking. If not, I'm sorry and can you rephrase your question. so I may understand it?

Vista Problems

You MUST be signed on as an Administrator to do any of this.

If you have downloaded and installed a mod, and the mod is appearing in your Data Files List, but not in your game And you are running Vista, you have run into a security feature of Vista called User Account Control. Or more simply, UAC.

Quoted from the Oblivion Mods FAQ WIKI

Alternate Install Directory

If you install your Elder Scrolls game into any directory OTHER than the default, none of these problems occur. Thus, you can bypass the Vista security issues by installing the game onto another hard drive or into a new directory that is not located within the "Program Files" root directory (such as "C:\Games").

Run as Admin

Another way to fix it is to right-click the ".exe" file and click properties, then check "Run as administrator". Then click OK. Do this for both the "oblivion.exe" and TESConstructionSet.exe", and any programs you are using that copies files to protected directories (such as WinRAR, 7z, or WinZip).

Disable UAC

Windows Vista users who are fairly confident in the security of their computers might also consider disabling UAC altogether. This will allow all programs writing privileges to the Program Files directory. Although this obviously creates a state of decreased security for your PC, it is a very helpful one-size-fits-all solution to a number of compatibility issues with the Vista OS.

Look here for instructions on how to turn UAC off. http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vis...-windows-vista/

Of these, solution #1 is STRONGLY PREFERRED. Solutions 2 and 3 (running as admin and disabling UAC) remove important safety features of the OS. In contrast, installing Oblivion elsewhere resolves the problems with Oblivion without reducing your overall security.

Note that unless you opt to reinstall the game in a different location (option 1) when you start trying to make your own mods using the construction set, you will run into these problems again.

No-- you're doing fine. I just needed some clarification. You'd be surprised how many people can't get mods to work because they just take the archive file (zip, rar, 7z, whatever) and drop it whole and unopened in the Data folder. Then they say, "Well I put the mod in the Data folder but it won't work." I just needed to make sure that this wasn't one of those.

And I apologize for taking so long to get back-- I'm not sure where you are, but I wrote that last post right before I went to bed last night, and it's now the following morning for me.

Did Dezi's response help? You said in your original post that you'd turned of the UAC and tried installing to an alternate directory, so I'm guessing "no," but following her neatly laid out steps might've done it.

Regarding the installation of mods in general-- yes, the best way to do it is to extract the original archive somewhere else (most extraction programs will do this by default-- they'll extract the files to a folder with the same name as the original archive and in the same place as you have the archive saved. That's what you want to do.) Then open up that folder and find the files you need. If there's another named folder inside of that one, then just keep opening things until you get down to the level that contains one (or more) esp file(s), hopefully a uniquely named readme, and maybe some other folders. Unless there are alternate folders (some of the body mods, for instance, will provide a number of different choices), you can then just highlight everything at that level and copy all those files and folders to your Data folder. And if it asks, yes, overwriting the existing folders is fine. The new mod will just add things to the existing folders-- unless it's an update or modification of an existing mod (or unless the modder is an idiot), it won't overwrite any files. I suggest copy instead of move, just so that you'll still have the original folder in its original form in case something goes wrong and you need to start over. If the mod folder does contain alternate choices (extra texture files or such) then you'll have to sort through them and figure out which ones you want to use. If there isn't a readme with the mod or if it's unclear regarding what needs to be installed, then my suggestion would be to email the author and give her hell, since it's her responsibility to clarify anything that might be out of the ordinary regarding her mod. :D

If you've successfully copied the esp(s) directly to your data folder (so that they're not in any subfolder that might've been in the original archive), then they should show up in the Data Files section of the Launcher and in the left pane of OBMM, regardless of whether or not anything else is installed correctly. If the rest of the stuff isn't installed correctly, then they won't work in game, but they should still be there. If you've successfully followed Dezi's suggestions and successfully copied the esps to the correct Data folder and they're still not even showing up in the Data Files window or in OBMM...... then your game is broken in some way I've never heard of before.

Wish I could help more-- let us know how it's working.
