Nexusaurus
I know what your thinking. "Fallout already has monsters, why are posting this?"well, I have an idea that I think would be fairly interesting. All these vanilla monsters in fallout are neat, but in the end, they're just mutated livestock. So, what I'm asking is the addition of some beasts straight from you nightmares.Imagine the Mojave populated with H. P. Lovecraft-esque beasts made of teeth, tentacles, and despair. For creative inspiration, merely look click in the image icon for this link.https://www.google.com/#q=h.p.+lovecraft+monsters(of course, be careful not to accidentally copy the beasts therein.)I'm aware that this is not lore friendly, but I just think it would be an interesting concept. EDIT: thanks to the community's help, this mod is now has a working concept and support. if anyone new is reading this and interested in the idea, please visit the mod talk forum with the topic, Recruiting Talented Modders Edited March 12, 2014 by Nexusaurus
MarchUntoTorment
Not going to lie, I would totally play this if someone made it. True horror is something Fallout lacks - the only two really good examples I've seen are Dead Money and the Dunwich Building (although Outpost Lambda in the mod 'The Inheritance' was pretty damned scary too). Nexusaurus
That was my general idea for the mod, making it all horror-y. but not generic horror like zombies and crap. I was thinking of unique and surreal monsters that just aren't right, you know? Also, I thought of a mini version of the mod.editing the sky so monstrous unearthly creatures orbit the earth with trailing tentacles.that would be neat too. devinpatterson
That was my general idea for the mod, making it all horror-y. but not generic horror like zombies and crap. I was thinking of unique and surreal monsters that just aren't right, you know? It's not a question of motivation. I'm sure there are a ton of fans of Lovecraft that would love to see creatures like those from the Cthulhu mythos. But as a practical matter your just not going to see new creatures made from whole cloth. I'v only seen a couple for FO. Most are adaptions of existing creatures, and even those are a lot of work for a single creature, much less a total adaption/conversion. As an example of a non humanoid creature, fire up blender and load an eyebot. You'll see it uses the same hierarchy as a humanoid skeleton but in totally different animations. And there's a minimum number of animations you have to have. So long story short, there's a will but no (practical) way. Dont bet on seeing Nyarlathotep anytime soon. You can get away with a lot by editing/customizing existing models, but even that is a huge workload and not everyone knows how to do that (much less has the time). Also, I thought of a mini version of the mod. editing the sky so monstrous unearthly creatures orbit the earth with trailing tentacles. that would be neat too. I havn't done anything with the skydome yet, but I think that might be possible via a texture swap. Might even be possible to do an animated texture so you could see some basic movement. devinpatterson
im pretty sure i ran into a mini cthulu in the wasteland the otherday. must be one of the mods im using. maybe when worlds collide? I don't think it would be a problem if you don't need to animate the wings or the tentacles (ie just using the biped/humanoid skeleton, whether NPC, ghoul whatever). But when you want the wings and tentacles to move, or if you want a non humanoid critter that's unlike any existing skeleton (ie Nyarlathotep), all bets are off and you'v got a whole new level work ahead of you. Then your going to need someone with a fair amount of skill and time....and we don't seem to have too many people in FO/NV that are willing to do that anymore. Yeah, I get it if the creatures are based off a vanilla mesh, I wouldn't mind that. but I've seen what people have done with textures and I can see potential for what can be done here. I mean, for example, you could take a lurker, give it a ghoul's skin, add a few nonfunctioning tentacles and extra mouths and boom, you just made one of Shub Niggurath's tree babies. devinpatterson
Yeah, I get it if the creatures are based off a vanilla mesh, I wouldn't mind that. but I've seen what people have done with textures and I can see potential for what can be done here.Yep that's what I was referring to when I said; You can get away with a lot by editing/customizing existing models, but even that is a huge workload and not everyone knows how to do that (much less has the time). and my comment on Cthulhu. I'v found when your doing models that are way off from the general dimensions of the skeleton it can be tricky. It can take a bit of skill. For instance when I did ED-E's dufflebag it was a pain in the butt, pic; http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u404/devinlpatterson/FONV%20Mods-works%20in%20progress/EDEduffleBag_zps3cd4044a.jpg But as long as you understand what's practical and are willing to accept some compromise to work within the limitations of what you have available (and you get a decent modeler or three) you can start moving forward with the mod in a realistic direction. Perhaps addressing other aspects of the storyline. For instance Lovecraft often wedded technology with the otherworldly physics of the Cthulhu mythos (ie "From Beyond"). Perhaps a fallout version of Black Mesa that researched & opened a dimensional rift. During the war containment was loss and what was left of the facility became a dimensional nexus. Perhaps even an apocalyptic cult that formed near by, and had attained knowledge of the old ones. I mean, for example, you could take a lurker, give it a ghoul's skin, add a few nonfunctioning tentacles and extra mouths and boom, you just made one of Shub Niggurath's tree babies.Since the dark young are essentially a walking tree/mass of tentacles, pic; I'd go another direction. I'd try adding several tree meshes to the upper half or even 2/3rds. Possibly even removing the arms (as they aren't actually needed to inflict damage) and seeing how the attack animation looks. It may not pan out, but it will look a lot better than a re-textured lurker with some fake tentacles. Anyway, best of luck on teh project, I'll try to help if time permits. http://images.sodahead.com/profiles/0/0/2/0/5/4/3/0/9/Cthulhu-16806134819.jpeg
