District 9.

This was an awesome movie. For me, who lives in South Africa, it was nice to see a Sci-Fi taking place in SA. I absolutely loved every moment of it.

But what do you guys, the International media think about it? Did the Afrikaans profanities irritate you? Did you get mad at some of the more 'inside' jokes that only somebody who knows South African history will understand? Tell me what your feelings on this excellent movie was?

If you have any questions about inside jokes I'll try my best to answer them.

To me, the film was a waste. It had so much promise in the beginning, then became a crappy action movie. It had no real depth, to be honest. The characters were shallow and boring, the plot simple, and whatever message the movie could have had was destroyed soon after it was brought up. At most, it's a mediocre action movie.

Yes, I know it's supposed to be about racism and segregation, mirroring the situation in South Africa to give it some measure of truthfullness, but really. I felt no sympathy for any character. The different sides were completely unambiguous morally. What could have been a great documentaryesque satire of real world politics and racism became a pitiful excuse for a 'deep' film.

You want to watch a show about racism and prejudice, watch Elfen Lied. It's better than any book, or movie I've ever seen. And I read alot, and watch many movies. Trust me. It's mindblowing.

I don't really think it was meant to be a 'deep' movie and neither was it really supposed to reflect the racism in our country. It made jabs at some of our past problems and misdemeanors, but it wasn't supposed to be kind of a documentary for our country. I think this is something that Neill Blomkamp also said about the movie. He didn't mean it as a documentary. He wrote a funny, dramatic and action orientated Sci-Fi movie set in South Africa and he succeeded in doing so. Most of the movie's fun came from the absolute hilarity and absurdity of some of the events.

As for people thinking that racism still runs rampant in our country, it doesn't. Just like in America, we've come to accept other people and their cultures and work together to make South Africa a better place for all of us to live in. Just like America, we still have a small group who cling to racism like maggots to rotting meat and always talk about the 'good old days', but they are a very small minority and people frown upon them.

I can't say it's the best movie ever, but I did enjoy it a immensely!

I agree with Halororor's post <{POST_SNAPBACK}> that it wasn't meant to be a serious documentary on racial discrimination. It may be more of an allegory, poking fun at South Africa's historical dealings with racism in a science fiction context, making the audience laugh and letting them draw their own conclusions. If it made one more aware of the evils of racism, then it succeeded.

I watched this movie with my toddler, husband, and mom (the latter of which is an experienced casual FPS gamer, so we kept cracking jokes throughout the film about how the movie was reminiscent to this and that game.) I very much enjoyed this film! Though, I wouldn't say it was the BEST ever, it was certainly the highlight of my 2009 moviegoing experience (excluding Slumdog Millionaire, which I saw a few months ago). It could have been deeper, but, come on, you can't help but laugh at how unfortunate and unlucky Wikus is. He's such a nice guy, loves his wife very much, just trying to be a humanitarian, and this whole ordeal falls on him. It's a good change from the usual army guy/soldier/tough guy/James Bondies that are typically put in such roles.

Who doesn't like to watch bipedal robots blasting people into bits? I think the action in this movie was very well portrayed. The animation could have been better, though; some of the CG just wasn't convincing, particularly with the Prawns. I did like the sound effects. There's alot more I could say on the topic but I'm terribly exhausted.
