Problems with textures when using Mods

Hello folks,

I have started using mods that add new quests to the game but have unfortunately found that any the textures are not working properly.

The first time I noticed this was when the "Great Green Yao Guai" from the "Megaton Contacts" mod wasn't green at all and instead took on the texture of whatever the beast was standing on. It was amusing because it reminded me of the Nick Nolte monster from the 2003 Hulk movie. I hoped that it was a problem specific only to that mod.

Now I am playing the "A note easily missed" mod and have found the same problem. All the cool new posters that the modder has made appear as strange orange blobs, or take on another texture found elsewhere in the cell... or combines a flickering mixture of both. Also, all the map pictures that the mod allows you do D/L to your Pop Boy don't appear either, just a PipOS error message.

My first concern is maybe my file structure is wrong. I have noticed that most mods add the folders "Textures", "Sounds" and "Meshes" to my FO3 Data folder. Is that where they're supposed to be? Or are they in an incorrect location?

My second concern is that maybe my graphical preferences are not allowing the textures to be displayed. I am using low-res options so as to ensure my framerate is nice and smooth, could it be that these settings will not allow the modder-made textures to display? That seems vaguely plausible, but does not account for why the Pip Boy images aren't displayed.

I really need your help. I have a feeling that if I get past this I'll be able to lose myself for hours in this mod.

Lastly, I have downloaded the mod where you can me intimate with various wasteland ladies (for purely novel pruposes!), you should know the one I mean, it's the most popular quest mod! Anyway. I use FOMM to unpack that one and it places the files in a file structure similar to the one described above, but I get a CTD whenever I start the game... a fraction of the first slide shows but then, crash!

I would appreciate your help!

Thanks for your help, I got the textures working!

However I am again angry and simmering at myself for even botheirng to try using mods. Do you know why I haven't used Mods for Fallout 3 before, and why I didn't even bother buying Oblivion "For the mods"? Because I knew stupid crap like this would happen! Last night I tried using them, got myself all excited when they SEEMED to work well, but now I feel crushed and annoyed because it seems you have to be some sort of C++ de-*censored* to be able to run these things properly.

OK, this issue has affected me for ALL mods that I have played, whether or not I loaded them using FOMM. In each instance only ONE mod was installed, the one I was trying to play.

My current issue is frequent Crashes to Desktop whenever I try to save my game in an area that contains user-created material. It is SO infuriating.

For example:

"A Little Mutant Problem"

There is one quest where you have to fight a ridiculously huge Beserker outside the Super-Duper Mart. Trying to fast travel from this area (which initiates an auto-save) or save my game whilst there causes a CTD. I decided the Mod was a bit to silly for me anyway so I decided to uninstall it. PROBLEM SOLVED.

"Megaton Contacts"

I mentioned the Big Green Bear in my original post. Again, trying to Fast Travel from this area or save my game there manually caused a CTD. I simply walked to Canterbury commons and saved my game there, and went on to finish all the quests and then uninstalled the Mod. PROBLEM SOLVED.

"A note easily missed"

'So, now I embark on a mod that seems grander than the two I just tried. I have trouble with the textures, but as I stated I fixed that thanks to this thread. However now I can't enter the Tiger manufacturing plant. Entering it causes a CTD every time. And, as I predicted, saving whilst outside the bulding causes a CTD.

It seems there is something fundamentally wrong with my system. It cannot be because of mod clashes because each of these mods were installed totally independent of the other. I do not have a clue what it is. I have 32-bit vista and apart from the occasional random CTD whilst playing Fallout 3 and DLC, everything runs just fine!

Please, school me here folks, suggest some sort of tweak or maintenence I can undertake that will allow me to enjoy mods as much as you guys. Should I reinstall Fallout? I'd rather not because knowing my luck GFWL will stuff up the update. I have all my achievements so maybe installing a mod that makes the game playable WITHOUT GFWL would help? What do you think? My PC said it doesn't need a de-frag. Graphics drrivers are up to date. What the hell could be the problem here? Do I need to install GECK?

PLEASE help me here folks. I have so many ideas about what I would do if I were to make a mod but I can tell you now that if I can't even play one of the bloody things that is NEVER going to happen. All I wanna do is enjoy more Fallout 3 and become part of the mod-users community, but as far as I can see bad luck just won't let me do it.

ANY suggestions that would assist me in fine-tuning my game for Mod use would be MUCH apreciated!

to properly use mods you must do the following:

disable GWFL

move your save-games

install update 1.7

install ArchiveInvalidation Invalidated

install FOMM

install FOSE

install FO3Edit

just doing all that should solve most of your problems.

any further problems can be solved using the above tools.

there are pinned threads throughout this forum explaining the process, as well as some good beginners guides in the Article section.

you would do well reading through a couple until it clicks.

Thanks...

I have disabled GFWL and everything is working wonderfully at the moment. I will follow all your other advice as well.

Pardon the n00b whining, I am a habitual console gamer, so working under hood is NOT my speciality, but I learn from my mistakes =)

Download this tool: FO3Edit from the nexus hp

Unpack it anywhere you want, it doesn't matter

Then rename the .exe to Fo3masterupdate and run it. check the bottom of the list that follows for any errors if you don't get one you're free to play

It switches all your .esp files into .esm files or something like that

If some of your plugins do show an error you might wanna open them in G.E.C.K. and resave them. Just save them, nothing more.

then run the masterupdate again. this only affects very old mods which weren't created with the G.E.C.K. because it wasn't released at the time.

But that's more you wanted to hear.

Anyway, if you wan't to change your plugins back to .esp rename the .exe to Fo3Masterrestore and run it----> voila

Also renaming it to FO3Edit is veeery helpful. you can aply an filter whick checks all your mods for critical conflicts and so on... but thats another story

For now this is all you need to hear.

Sorry for my english it isn't my native tongue

Hope i could help

MfG
