Need help getting started.

Larsenexz, so did you get it to work after installing to C:\Steam? As Krazyguy75 said, you need to enable DefaultLoadouts.ini if you're planning on changing it. But if you just want to edit perk trees, you need DefaultGameCore.ini only.

I am about to give Ghost. I have tried and did a clean install. I changed the defaultgamecore.ini and loadouts IN the exe and the game will NOT start. I click on the short cut or the exe. If I do short cut it brings me to my choice of EW or EU but when I click on EW nothing happens. The game simply will not launch. No message nothing. I have deleted the game and again and I am re installing. The one thing I must say is that making a perk tree manager for EW must be really f*#@ing hard since there is not one mod in all of nexus mods for Xcom that is an acutal Perk tree manager. I am rather frustrated. I have followed the video and the guide and it simply will not work. I just do not know what I am doing wrong.

After I save from HXD, I go into the gamecore iNI to disable movies and then go to make some minor changes to the perk trees. ...nothing. At this point I am ready to throw in the towel. I am going to reinstall again but this is the last try.

Oh I do disable updates to the game and restart steam in offline mode THEN try to start the game. Again nothing.

Flustered, I think Ill eat dinner...

Assuming you're on windows, and you have the legit version, I don't see why that would happen. You're just changing the two strings, and not anything else? And the file size does not change?

On the subject of no one making perk managers... no... it's cause the perk trees are in the DGC ini in EW... so it's pointless to make something that manages it given it is already managed...

@Larsenexz: Modding is a very exact process. Everything has to be correct or it fails. But this is something many, many people have been able to do successfully so we are pretty confident we can straighten this out.

While it's apparent you feel you are following instructions, it's also apparent something is not going correctly. So, if you want to try to see this through, we need you to spell out exactly what you are doing at each step giving details such as full paths to the files you are altering according to the instructions here. When you get to hex editing, screenshots would be useful, though you would have to post them to a free third-party site such as FileDen, ImageShack, Bild.me, etc. You may also want to take a look at this article which has some screenshots of what you will see in a hex editor. While it is speaking about altering a UPK file, the type of file is irrelevant to the process.

Larsenexz, how exactly are you renaming X to Y? You can click with the mouse right on that X you want to rename and press Y on the keyboard: HxD will replace X with Y. But if you'll try to insert something (or delete) rather than replace, it will break your game for sure.

Ok this morning I made the changes to the Gamecore.ini. I did not change the loadouts.ini. I made small changes to the game core ini. and save and started the game each time I made a change. Game loaded up.

First change was disable movies, started up without fine.

Next was arc in pistol slot, start up fine but cannot tell if this will apply.

Next was a change to PSI change from '4' to '.01', start up fine, again cannot see if this works yet.

Next was changing rocket chance from 90 to 100. Again started fine but cannot tell if this applies.

Last changes were to perk trees giving assaults sprinter instead of defensive and bulletswarm to support. Again game fired up fine but cannot see if changes applied..

Do I need a new game for each change I do?

If there was a saved game (which there is none) would changing perk trees apply to a saved game?

Thanks again Ghost for your patience. All of you here inspired me to try again with a more Buddhist point of view.
