Any way to make objects playable and unplayble in script

I don't know of a way to do that. How would the player know an NPC had it if it wasn't playable? Or do you mean usable by the NPC but not by the player?

You could probably accomplish the same thing by making 2 different items, one playable, one not, and then swapping them via script when conditions are met.
