DVI to RCA (Red, White, and Yellow)

I'm planning to change my PS3 to a computer like thing, but I need a DVI to RCA adapter for sound. I've gotten everything but the sound... (mouse, keyboard, headset) I've bought a cheap DVI to HDMI cable and realized it wasn't what I needed. Instead I need the DVI to the red, white, and yellow input dealy. I don't know exactly what it's called, but if you need me to explain it better then I will. Thanks in advance. So basically I just need to know what that adapter is called. :D

What exactly is a 'computer like thing' ?

 

Usually the RCA Red white yellow are for stereo sound & composite (analog) video. With red & white the 2 stereo channels and yellow the video. These are commonly found on VCRs.

HDMI is a digital type signal.

 

A DVI to Component adapter may be what you are looking for, the RCA plugs on these are usually colored blue, green & red.

Here's a more detailed explination of what I'm trying to do...

 

I'm trying to move my Playstation 3 next to my desktop, hooking it up to my monitor, and playing it on my monitor rather then TV. I hooked everything up but the thing is I couldn't get any sound. I bought a Skullcandy PS3 headset and for that I'd need the same RCA Red, Yellow, and White that a TV has. So I googled up DVI to RCA. Why? Because the RCA (R,Y,W) that came with the PS3 hooks up to the AV Multi Output and hooks into the RCA on the TV. What I would need to do with my monitor is get a DVI to RCA (R,Y,W) so I would be able to do what I just described only with a monitor and hook the other two audio cables up to my headset, thus creating the 'computer like thing' on my PS3.

found something that would convert a 480p into 720p, thats awsome. I wonder how it does stuff in real time like games, will there be time delay. Lets hope not.

I'm guessing it doesn't actually change the video to make it the same quality as 720p. It probably just converts the signal to HDMI, so you can connect it to something like an HD TV easier, and maybe scales the image up to that resolution too. But it doesnt actually increase the quality of the image - only whatever device is rendering the image in the first place can do that.

 

Similarly, the maximum quality of the image will be limited by the weakest link, as it were. So if you're using an RCA cable then a converter then an HDMI cable, the image quality will be limited to whatever can pass through the RCA cable.

It sounds like you have the video part already and only need the audio. So what you need is to break out the 2 channel audio which is the red and white RCA and send that to your headset. The only part on the red white yellow RCA connectors that carries video is the yellow. The red and white are the 2 channels of stereo sound. They do not need to go into a computer monitor unless the monitor has speakers built in.

 

Most headsets use a mini stereo connection. The adapter to go from 2 RCA connector to a single mini stereo connector are inexpensive and readily available. They can be found in places like Radio Shack, Best Buy and Wall Mart in the US. I probably have 2 or 3 in my assorted adapters box. You may have to mix and match to get the right gender for each side as most seem go from a male mini stereo to a pair of female RCA connectors, and I think what you may need is a female mini stereo to a pair of male RCA plugs. But you should look to see which connector and what gender you need for each.

 

If your local shops don't have the adapters, try the on line stores such as Crutchfield, New Egg, Tiger Direct and my current favorite for cables Monoprice.

Yes i was thinking about that, and just for the conversion alone to HDMI is a bonus, but there is component video for the wii and gc, and they say they notice a big jump in quality from 480I to P.

The headset itself has the red and white cables already on it so you can hook it up to the TV.
