Game freezes at main menu

Well, I've installed a few mods (none that involve the main menu)
and now, when I start the game
the background will load, but everything else will not show up, ever (the fog, and the "Load" "new" "continue", etc, buttons.

If the problem is with your load order, then you should download and run TES5Edit.

 

It can tell you if there is a file there out of order, but it might not be a load order problem.

 

I usually sit for several seconds in a situation like you describe, and after a few seconds the fog rolls in and the menu appears.

 

If the problem is the load order, then TES5Edit should help you clear that up.
