Extending on screen dialog display

I am attempting to hack various mods written by other people for my own ends. This is often a good way to start to learn modding for any given game, so who knows, maybe one of these days people will see results from me beyond me tweaking the game to suit my own ends.

I have written some rather longer sets of dialog for some companions, hacking the extra dialog into the existing, through the GECK. However I have encountered the problem that when playing the mod, the game will flash the dialog onto the screen giving the player not much more than a second or so to read what is often two sentences of written dialog. I have found no obvious way of extending this. I have tried recording a silent wav file that lasts long enough to read the text (and affixing it to the dialog), and that seems to extend the time of dialog display a little bit, but only by an extra second or so, nowhere near enough to read everything (even though the wav file theoretically lasts long enough to read it).

Is there something obvious that I have missed? Is there not a single variable that one can tweak for any given dialog that will define the time on screen of the text? Or am I looking at a huge amount of learning yet to do, so as to accomplish what seems at first to be a trivial task?
