Building my second Computer

Recommended Posts

Must be nice to not have a budget.

I always look at the Power supply first. Without sufficient power the rest will have problems. Remember, those power supply calculators are designed to show you the MINIMUM power supply size you need. Not the best - always go a little higher, or in your case get a 1000W supply.

The motherboard is the heart of the system. a fabulous graphics card will only give mediocre performance with a mediocre mother board, and a fair video card can be made to look good with a really good mother board. If you plan to have multiple video boards, make sure your Mother board will support them without blocking access to connectors.

Then pick a case that can hold both your chosen power supply and mother board. Not all cases will work. Also, take the length of the video card into account and what it will cover up when installed, and what will be behind the video board that can get in the way.

Then RAM, get ram that is compatible with the motherboard you choose, Newer motherboards can hold 12 or 16 GB of RAM. but it can only be used with a 64 bit OS. A 32 bit Operating system is limited to 4 GB MAX. The motherboard may be able to hold more, but the OS will not use it.

Dual monitors, once you use dual you will understand. 20 inch minimum, bigger if you can. I know that Neither Oblivion or FO3 support dual monitors, but I have great hopes for the next generation.

Here's what I have already. There is NO limit to my price.

- MSI 790FX-GD70 AMD 790FX ATX AMD Motherboard

- AMD Phenom II x4 955 Black Edition Deneb 3.2GHz

- x2 GTX295

I need some suggestions on the Motherboard, Memory, HDD, and pretty much everything else. Thanks in advance. There are hotlinks for each part.

Nice rigg your planning on getting, it sure must be nice not to be on a budget. I would wiat tell the 300gt's comes out this month though, some say november, very nice though.

They say the clock speeds of the 300gt is going to atleast 800mhz and above, not lower. Maybe even 1ghz.
