Strange Unknown Pounding Noise

Recommended Posts

Every few seconds I hear this "BANG" sound that sounds like a catapult shooting off. It started after I got Martin to Jaufre at that church with the house. It seemed to start as soon as I quick traveled there.

It also seems quite random and unpredictable.

I do have mods installed but I did not add any new mods since the beginning of the game, therefor if they did cause the thumping, it would have been from the start.

I have tried to use "Duke Patricks Basic Script Effect Silencer" but I have no real idea how to use it. I activate it via Oblivion Mod Manager, and nothing happens in-game. Is there something special I have to do that is not named in the description?

Please tell soon, this noise is so freaking annoying! And makes gameplay difficult.

Sounds like the old area effect bug. There is an option in the unofficial patch to fix this .

You usually hear the booming noise when an enemy is in your vicinity.

I installed the unofficial patch awhile ago. Unless there is some setting to fix it specifically I do not know how to do so.

And as far as I can tell there is no enemies near me as it is CONSTANT! I can be in a temple, my house, a castle that is well guarded! It does not matter it is always seemingly pounding on and on. The only way to stop is to go into my inventory or menu or somehow pause the game.

This is the Scripted Effect spell casting sound defined in a Vanilla game. You're hearing it continuously, because some advanced scripting mod of your's uses scripted effect type area spells to repeatedly scan your surrounding for actors or the like, as everything such a spell hits will get the script executed on it to do certain fancy things. Some time ago it was superior to reference walking loops which ran through every instance of an actor/object/whatever in your cell to achieve the same effect. It's also not always the same for everybody, as it depends on the mod doing the spamming when exactly it spams. Some scan only when enemies are around, some only under a specific condition, some do so no matter what.

You using Duke Patrick's BSES already was a good start, but keep in mind these things can easily become undone by any plugin affecting the spell effects loading after them, or even the bashed patch. Later however does have a switch of its own nowadays to also turn off these annoying effects without the need for a specific mod to do that.

Everyone I told of this and the solutions to get rid of it so far reported mixed results with one silencer working while others did not. While I doubt that's even possible, I know they're quite picky about their place in load order and conflict-prone with other mods affecting spell effects. Every solution seems to handle some things differently, so inherently they take different care of some of the problems than the others.
