Oblivion is broken :(

I recently had to System Recovery (Compaq built-in feature) because I had firefox up on fallout3nexus.com for 20 minutes unattended and got some super computer-wrecking virus. I installed oblivion after all needed drivers were installed and now I bring up the game and click "New Game" and nothing happens; so I downloaded a pre-made save, loaded it, and got a Crash to desktop. I installed Deadly Reflex, OBSE, and Modular Oblivion Enhanced additional plug-ins (only "unlockers" and main quest delayer) before launching oblivion first, so I was wondering if maybe the mods affected the game, since I dl'd and activated the .esp's before I launched oblivion for the first time. Ok, so if I launch it without any unofficial mods, it works. I have Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine; but I enable an unofficial mod and it doesn't launch. I'm going to try a non-OBSE mod, and if that doesn't work, I am doomed.

It sounds like you started installing mods before the game was ready.

First, remove all of your mods, then try starting a new game. if it works, make a save - this sets up the ini file and the saves file in the right place. Be sure you have the latest patch and OBSE before installing any mods.

If that dosn't work, Here is a link to my complete uninstall/reinstall procedure.

It will take you through a uninstall that actually removes even the registry files that are normally left behind. While preserving all of your saves and mods. Then through an orderly reinstall that includes patching and setting up the ini, and the right way to install SI and patch it if necessary.

Ok, I did as instructed, re-dl'd deadly reflex, after installing obse first, I can launch with obse, but only as long as I have no obse mods enabled, I'm going to try and use a non-obse mod and see if it launches, this just happened on my other computer too; I think it's a problem with obse. I have GOTY edition and I haven't installed ArchiveInvalidation Invalidated!, maybe that's the problem, but I doubt it.

Deadly reflex is probably the last mod you want to start with. It is a very complex mod with a lot of interaction that can cause many problems unless it is just right. I recommend waiting until everything else is working before installing deadly reflex.

Please note that just disabling a mod in OBMM does not remove it. The texture and mesh files are still active even when the esp is disabled. So if there is a problem with textures or meshes, it will still be there.
