Hi,

I've been reinstalling Oblivion from scratch (for the i-don't-want-to-know th time...) and i've tried to do everything i could to narrow down the number of mods i'm loading each time. So, this brings me to my question : which levelling mod would you recommend me and why?

Some background about me : i've spent so many hours reinstalling Oblivion, tweaking .ini and browsing on internet on my quest for the best possible Oblivion... First of all, I had been satisfied with Fran's levelling up system. But then, browsing forums and specialists' sites, i've discovered that there are lots and lots of other possibilities, most of them recommending not to use Fran's system even when they were not promoting their own mod! :D So, i decided to settle down with Progress and nGCD. It seems to work fine, but the main drawback for me is the number of esp to load in Wrye Bash...

I've installed Realistic Health and Realistic Fatigue, so of course my attention has been drawn to Realistic Levelling. But the readme is not clear, as it seems to say that it can work along with Progress!! Is it true? Does it mean that it also work with Progress+nGCD? If yes, then, why should i bother with installing Realistic Levelling??

I also saw Oblivion XP, but i think that's not for me. Don't misunderstand me, I'm not saying it's a bad mod, it's just that i feel it's not what i'm looking for. I love the levelling systems in old RPGs, but i prefer Oblivion to be different.

There are certainly alternatives i don't know about, so feel free to tell me, but please help me by each time justifying why you would recommend me this or that mod.

Thank you!

I feel much the same way you do with regards to a leveling mod and have become very partial to SPAM (or Simbacca Player Advancement Method). This is after trying several of the better reputed and suggested leveling mods that exist.

Based on what you've said I think it might be a good fit for the following reasons:

1) It is a very straightforward mod and requires use of only a single .esp,

2) More or less only conflicts with other leveling mods. (i.e. works with OOO, MMM, Frans, pretty much anything else).

3) It is not an "auto-uber" system granting +5 on every level-up. Instead, it looks at what your class consists of and asks you for a secondary focus (i.e. magic, combat, stealth) in order to predict a balanced and sensible leveling scheme for the character.

4) It does not mess with anything else other than the leveling system. No tweaks to spells or providing XP for things that Oblivion doesn't already provide, for example.

5) It doesn't enforce things the author thinks you should live with or without because, well, that is how they think you should play.

6) It does not auto-level you nor does it hide leveling from you. You still have to make a decision as to what stats will improve. Just like standard Oblivion, leveling is an active process.

7) Comes with a configuration tool you can use to tweak or re-tweak its decisions if you want to change things to your taste.

SPAM modifies the leveling system but only enough so that it is very much the Oblivion system except it removes the need to focus on leveling minor skills during your career. In practice, this means you simply get to play the game and remain focused with the things that your character would likely concentrate on--use of your major skills. No grinding of minor skills to get more than a +2 are required.

As a result, the leveling process has a very natural and very realistic feel (for the Oblivion world). Even better, it really does make the game a lot more fun to simply play!

Note that it does come with a few additional .esps which are ALL completely optional and not necessary, unless of course they provide a feature you can't live without. In this respect, these "optionals" provide the ability to raise attributes above 100, slow down or speed up the major or minor skill rates, or otherwise alter skill rates in a specific way.

Frankly, I've used just the base .esp and found it to be great as it is--a very natural pacing and character strength comes about in a straight forward and simple manner.

Now, Dereliction, that what I call an answer ! :D Here, have a well-deserved kudo for your help!

I did not know about SPAM, but it looks quite straight-forward, as you said. And it only requires one .esp, according to what i saw of the options i won't use anyway. That's worth a look and a try and thanks again for the suggestion.

Nevertheless, I remain open to other suggestions! ;)

There are times, I guess, when my verbosity pays off. Imagine that! :P

Glad to have helped, I hope you like the mod as much as I do!
