Luminiari
Now, before I get into this, I'd like to ask that everyone be logical with their answers. EDIT: Forgot to mention that the following is a HYPOTHETICAL SITUATION. I haven't done the following yet; I'm merely asking for opinions before I do so, otherwise I'll start tracking down a new copy. When Oblivion was released, I went out and bought it. Same goes with Shivering Isles, Knights of the Nine and all the official DLC. However, I lent my copy of Oblivion out to a friend, and it came back scratched. Fearing that I'd have to buy another copy (it's not very easy to come by down here), I made a backup ISO of the original DVD and have been using that instead, so as to prevent any further damage to the original DVD. Bear in mind that I have NOT put this ISO on the internet, given it out or anything to that effect. The ISO has NOT left my house, either physically or technologically. The only person to use it is myself, and the only computer it has been used on is the same one I'm typing this on. I've looked into it, and creating a backup of ones' games to use instead of the original (providing the person making and using the backup has legitimately bought the game and does not intend to share the backup) is considered legal. However, a few people down here reckon it's considered piracy. Thoughts and opinions?
dezdimona
using it for yourself to protect your original disc is not piracy. When someone makes a copy and in turn gives it to friends or visits a site where you can DL said copies, that is piracy. Nexus Set
I agree that it's not piracy. It's something I would do, burn a personal backup and use it then just keep the original disc safe in the box. Though my opinion wouldn't hold any weight if the laws in your country would say that making a personal backup of a bought game is considered illegal. Luminiari
I'm not even sure what the laws here are anymore. Last time I REALLY checked (as in, went to a lot of effort to find out) it was perfectly legal. But a friend just told me now that that is no longer true... So I might do some looking around. Sarya
Making copies for personal use of any copyrighted product was always legal and never even required permission from anyone, why would that change somewhere all of a sudden? Are you sure your friend knows what he is talking about? Or had the government of your country made any strange decisions lately?

Sarya
dezi, some info is already present, but in any way I think the best for DesuChan will be to check the actual copyright laws for her country (and preferrably on some specialised site), as opinions are what they are - opinions, not facts, even those of friends. But as far as I know, american, russian and most european laws should allow creating copies for personal use, though I must admit that in russian law the details about this matter are not a little bit clear - we still wonder what are the limits for this "personal". I may only hope it's better for others.
