Davinelulinvega
I read the article on efficient leveling and decided, considering how the leveling system works that it was a good idea. I got totally fed up with it however after two hours of pointless grinding and used the console and leveled my character to level 30 and raised the difficulty slider to around 75 percent. Do you think that should be considered cheating? After all, effectively I just saved about a whole day of repetitive action. At first I felt like I had cheated, but after I had reflected on it I don´t feel like a cheater anymore. If I had just started playing the game without leveling first, I would not have experienced the game in all it´s facettes since you need to be at a certain level for some quests and can´t get the "cool looking items". Another thing. Do you think it´s "cheating" to go get a shamans staff and then go kill Umbra the first thing after exiting the sewers? And those are just a few examples. dezdimona
it's a single person game, ergo you cannot cheat. However you choose to enhance your gaming experience is up to you and don't let anyone tell you any different.
Dereliction
I read the article on efficient leveling and decided, considering how the leveling system works that it was a good idea. I got totally fed up with it however after two hours of pointless grinding and used the console and leveled my character to level 30 and raised the difficulty slider to around 75 percent. Do you think that should be considered cheating? First off, I totally understand your angst with the leveling system in Oblivion. IMHO, it is horribly designed and totally nonsense out of the box. I mean, why should a character find it so much more rewarding to grind *minor* skills than to focus on use of their major ones? I dunno, but that is how it goes, eh? So far as that goes, I'd strongly suggest you check out the mod I mention in this recent thread (see post #2): http://thenexusforums.com/index.php?showtopic=159515 With regards to you using the console to power your toon past the broken leveling system? Who cares! After all, it is a single player game. Whether you cheat or don't cheat, it won't affect anyone but you. And if it means that you had fun then I'm all for it, and you should be too! Beyond that, if use of the console is cheating then it isn't a far stretch to say that using a mod is cheating too. Both change the game, sometimes in radical ways, and often to the benefit of the character. Most people would define that as cheating in any other context, but again, who cares?! The point is to have fun, not to grind and work and spend our valuable time doing meaningless things which do not contribute to our entertainment. So long as no one else is negatively impacted it shouldn't make a difference. You might say it is a matter of philosophy. Sounds like your mind is on the right track though. Another thing. Do you think it´s "cheating" to go get a shamans staff and then go kill Umbra the first thing after exiting the sewers? And those are just a few examples. I bet you know what I'm going to say, eh? To take myself as an example, I'd never, ever, ever do that. To me, it just wouldn't be fun. But I sometimes use a mod that lets me have earlier access to spellmaking and enchanting. That, by most people's opinion, is out-and-out cheating, but for me it allows a lot more character customization and theming right from the start. In all, Oblivion is a sandbox. Build your own sand castles however you like. If that means clobbering Umbra early on, or using the console to get uber stats, or running naked through the world fist-fighting everything at 100% difficulty, well hey, its YOUR sandbox and no one can take it away from you. The only person or thing that can ruin it is yourself, and if that happens you can start over or flip a switch and fix it right away!
Davinelulinvega
I can´t use mods, or rather have not gotten any to work except dual wield which I immediately uninstalled again. I bought the game back in 06 when it came out and played it a little but my notebook back then wasn´t exactly up to the challenge. I got a macbook for Christmas last year and I recently felt the urge to play it again. After searching the internet I found there wasn´t an official version for Mac. I found however, an unofficial one via torrent that I am playing. I can´t get mods to work though. And for that matter neither most of the DLCs. For some unknown reason the Orrery one works and the Shivering Isles and that´s about it.
