Tidus44
Don't know of any specific games, but people who have suffered strokes are advised to go to http://www.eyecanlearn.com/ and http://www.lumosity.com/ and do the games/tests that involve shapes and tracking shapes and the other advice is to play word search and work puzzles. Friend of mine had a stroke about 2 years ago and lost arm/hand function and most vision on the right side and this is what he was advised to do by the rehab clinic. It seems to have helped him recover - he's not fully recovered but is much better than he was and even went back to work (he's a chef).
bben46
My GF had a minor stroke several years ago. She never completely lost vision, although things were blurry for a few days. She made what appears to be a full recovery in just a few weeks. But that will vary widely based on what parts of the brain are damaged and how much. She was an accountant - and she now cannot hold complex numerical relationships in her head any longer - meaning she can no longer work as an accountant even though she looks and acts fine - simple math is not a problem. My uncle had a more serious stroke - again no loss of vision, but he cannot remember some things, and has some problems with long term memory. Most of the time he is fine, he drives and does a lot of handyman projects with no problems. A good friend had a serious stroke, and although he lived for 6 more years, never fully recovered. He was unable to walk without a cane - more hobbling than walking, had problems talking, memory problems and not allowed to drive at all. A second stroke killed him. Because of a heart problem I am considered at risk for a stroke - and take blood thinners to cut down the risk.
eldav
Thanks Tidus44 for the sites, i have been looking for something like that and definitly will use them.bben46 i think too that i got the stroke because of my heart, since the doctors didnt find anything structual wrong with my brain.I too have blood thinners, those really expensive ones with a neddle, i will soon move on to cheaper pills.Im 34 and have to live with this for the rest of my life, im not angry but i hope i get to live a long life, it just sucks that it means that i have to quit smoking and get in better shape, but life is worth it.......and also games
bben46
Blood thinners can be a real PITA. They gave me the choice of either Coumidin (exactly the same stuff as a rat poison called Warfrin that works by causing the rat to bleed to death internally) or Pradaxa - a newer drug that cost US$300 a month. The coumadin requires constant trips to the doctor to have your blood tested, and a strict diet that doesn't allow a lot of my normal diet - and can cause internal bleeding. The Pradaxa is just insanely expensive. ( about one quarter of my total monthly pension) My internet research led me to Nattokinase - used in Japan for years with no side effects. But not approved by the US medical bureaucracy. My doctor prescribes the Pradaxa, but I take the Nattokinase instead - he says that if anything happens he cannot be held responsible. I would be interested in finding what kind of blood thinners they prescribe there. Tidus44
Ouch. You have my sympathy.I suppose the drugs may have different names in different places and I always ask the doctor exactly what drug it is I'm taking rather than the brand name. Where I am, Klexane (or Clexane) is Enoxaperin, but its essentially the same thing, a low molecular weight heparin. Been the needle route myself (3 a day for 6 weeks), but for blood clots in my left leg - the result of a rather nasty break. I was giving the needles to myself rather than going in to a clinic - which route does your doctor have you on - clinic or self injection?Actually, going to the lab 4 times a week for blood tests to see if I was maintaining the right level of anticoagulant in my blood was a lot more painful than taking the needles. Hopefully you get onto pills quickly as they are much easier to take (I was going to say "swallow" but that's too easy). I am surprised, but maybe not, that Nattokinase is still in use in places. It was recalled by Health Canada and is no longer available here. Apparently, a number of studies questioned its benefits as a thrombolytic drug. It did nothing for me in the month I was on it and I got a third clot in my leg while taking it. Hopefully, it works for others. My Doctor put me on warfarin after and the clots were gone in 4 months. The down side (for me) was most people take 3-5 milligrams a day and I was 12-15 a day to maintain a balance. One of the side effects is nausea - and it hit me a bit hard given the dosage I was on, especially in the mornings. I did find eating something like dry toast or crackers helped settle it down and the rest of the day I'd be OK.
eldav
Tidus44 it was an self injectory drug wich i took twice aday, so my heart monitoring test results came and they didnt find nothing, it would be better to be diagnosed than go on living cluless. I dont have to use Klexane no more, instead im going to get some pills called Clopidogrel, im getting them tomorrow so i dont know the dosage yet. And i am going to somekind of eye doctor to estimate the loss of field vision, mayby some kind of theraphy, i still going to bet that gaming helps the most to regain better eyesight.
