FO3 1.7 startup crashing using Vista

I saw a various number of threads on ppl crashing when starting up Fallout3, but the majority of them said they were running windows7

I have been playing fine [even with mods], up until the point where i just installed the new v1.7 patch (where i got my 1st error msg). Now i click play in the launcher - it starts to load, then crashes - every time. I usually use Xfire, Fraps, Avast Antivirus, etc...had all of them disabled and problem still isn't fixed. Then uninstalled all Mobo apps & all my hardware monitoring utilities - still nothing. Anybody know a fix for this??? I have gone over all the Windows 7 problems that i could find...even edited the "fallout.ini" file that was suggested for ppl with quad-core processors. Plz help

My Sys Specs

~ Asus P5N-D mb (ALL Asus software utilites have been uninstalled/disabled)

~ Intel Core2 Quad - Q9450 quad-core proc

~ 8 Gb Corsair XMS2 DDDR2-800 ram (CAS timings @ 4-4-4-12)

~ 512 Mb XFX GeForce 9800GTX Black Edition (tried using all 177.79 & 185.85 drivers from nvidia and also 182.08, 182.50, & 191.07 drivers from XFX -- 191.07 is currently used)

~ 1 Tb Seagate hd (SATA 3.0gbps) using only 1 OS...my Linux & Solaris UNIX stuff is on a different computer entirely

~ Creative Labs SB X-FI Fatality - Champion Edition 7.1 sound card

~ OS = Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit edition w/ SP2

~ I run game in 1920x1080@60Hz (same as desktop res) on a 24" Asus HDMI widescreen LCD

Changed theme to various other "classic" ones - nothing. Disabled aero & tried messing around with colors & appearances - nothing. Disable everything in the Performance/Advanced tab of the Advanced System Settings - still nothing. Rebooted system after each thing i tried. Is there no one who has had this problem fixed? Somebody help me plz...I really do NOT want to reformat my hard drive or do a total reinstall of my game. What was changed in patch 1.7 that would cause this instability???

Uninstalled, reinstalled game, and all patches up to v1.6. Version 1.6 works flawlessly, so i guess i'll just stick with that until now. lot of files to transfer again tho :(

First, when you install Fallout3 on a Vista machine, don't install to the Program Files directory, install to something like c:\games\fallout3. Less UAC and other Vista problems that way.

Install the 1.7 patch and only then re-install any DLCs you have.

Get Timeslip's Fallout Mod Manager to manage and set the load order of your mods. Trust me, you won't regret it -- the default Launcher has a ton of shortcomings as far as load-ordering your mods.

Then get ElminsterAU's FO3Edit utility to find and resolve mod conflicts. You'll want Miax's great FO3Edit Guide - Web-enized to maximize your use of this great program.

Reinstall your mods, using FOMM (to set load order) and FO3Edit to find conflicts and create a merge patch. Run FO3Edit in Master Update mode. This fixes some Bethesda bugs as well as making sure all the ONAM records in all the mods are in sync.

Launch FOMM, click "Launch Fallout3" and enjoy your more stable Fallout3!
