I can't pick up my custom weapon creations unless they are in containers

I am brand new to modding, and just learning how to re-texture and alter meshes to existing weapons. I have successfully modded several weapons, but I run into this persistent issue...

 

-If all I change is the texture, then everything works perfectly.

 

-If I alter the mesh (mainly I have been making some of the standard shotguns into sawed-off versions by shortening parts of the 3d shape in Blender) then I run into a problem where I can only "take" the weapon if it is in a container. If I place the weapon on the floor or ground of the worldspace, then when I cursor over it, the game treats it as though it is just part of the floor or ground. I cannot grab it with Z, or take any action on it. The name of the weapon does not appear when I move near it. It is basically like an un-actionable object.

-If I put the weapon in a container, I can take it, and equip and use it, and everything is fine. I can put it in another container and take it out again later. But if I drop it on the ground, I cannot pick it up again. I can sometimes move it around by stepping over it or shooting it with another gun, but that is it.

 

-What am I doing wrong? I am leaving the havok meshes alone, not altering any of their values. Is there some setting that I am neglecting that would cause this behavior?
