well if you like building, why not go with Simcity, Sims etc. ?

why buy FPS (first person shooter), when you don't like killing ?

and well Fallout does deliver what i says

i quote original Fallout 2 line:

FALLOUT 2 A Post-Nuclear Role-Playing Game

and boy does it deliver :D

Spammster, I meant building up in the sense of 'not destroying' all the time - a scenario where you can go in and get rid of the baddies and then rebuild the shattered world to a working environment. A storyline that has more then loot and kill in it. Having said that, I do like building and I have played all the SimCity games.

I bought Fallout3, after months of umming and ah-ing, since it is an FPS, but drawn to it because of the rave reviews. I wanted to try it out for myself, despite it not really being my sorta game. Were it not for the desolation and mess everywhere I might yet be playing it because I do think it has a lot going for it . It has sort of given me a taste for FPS's, in that I liked the fact that I could actually hit what I was firing at and even come out of the confrontation alive - which doesn't happen much in Oblivion, so I am now thinking that I might give one of the older Call of Duty games a go, to see if that holds a similar appeal - and less monsters. Good games are not that common, even less the ones that I like to play, so here's hoping I can find one that will be as good as F3 - but different.

for some retro gaming you might wanna give Fallout 1 & 2 a try (which takes out the livecombat component, its all turn based, meaning your action points define what you can do during each round.)

and personally I still like Fallout 2 more than Fallout 3 even though it has horrid 2D graphics and probably more bugs than F3 (which an unofficial patch fixes for the most part).

really you die in fights in Oblivion ? personally i find the enemys to be weaker than in Fallout (compared in very hard mode), just smack the cr*p out of them with a sword and switch some magic in there for good measure.

but i wouldn't go with Call of Duty, I think a game you would really enjoy is Fable, the lost chapters for PC, it pretty much got the same requirements as F3, so it will work on your PC and it has enemys, but these are leveled well, if you play it like you're supposed to, you won't have problems finishing it, it is quite dark at some points but its all set in a nice environment with loads of quests for the picking (some essential most side quests).

Fable @ amazon

it is quite old by now, but personally i think the fable graphics surpass the F3 graphics (without mods) and so far i haven't noticed bugs in it (unlike "other" games :D)

Spammster, I did try an old Fallout game, some time before I bought F3 - it was only a couple of quid so I figured if I did not like it I hadn't lost much. I thought it was so bad I barely got into it. Probably it was the really old version. Graphics were awful.

Yes, I die in Oblivion ( hangs head in shame). Its close-up blows there isn't it - I never seem to do enough, or have the right powers. Now if I had a gun.. but then, at my level the bullets would probably only travel about a shadows length - like my arrows....

OK, I will take your advice and not go for C o D now, and will look out for Fable and see what I think of that. Thanks :)

sadly there isn't a fable demo, since the PC version was only released after the XBOX version was so succesful.

but you should find massive amounts of reviews and gameplay videos and by now the game should be sold for around 10 bucks (amazon wants 20, so in stores it will be in the bargain bin)

so you won't loose much money on it and it is worth it (bought my copy the moment they finally released a PC version (which i think was about 2 years after the xbox release or so))

and for your gore level, Fable was released as 12+ here (germany) so its your basic not to violent (though sometimes getting close to the border) RPG. as a general advice, use lightning a lot, great spell if you suck at close combat (and level 1 lightning is your starting attack magic skill).

I had a look at some screen shots and it looks colourful, if a little cartoony, and I think it is going for a reasonable price on Amazon.co.uk, so that is at the top of my list. Been looking around to see what else, but not found anything yet. I s'pose I could dig out a really unusual Russian game I bought a while back and played for about a week. Can't recall its name now, but that was a strange one... you had to achieve the particular quest before nightfall or something nasty came and got ya.....hmm (sigh)... nope, keep looking, and maybe give Fable a try :)

russian game = S.T.A.L.K.E.R. ?

hell thats the only russian game i can think of, thats somewhat new fits FPS/RPG and is actually kinda good (now if they just started right away with english language and not these internet-translation unoff. patches (don't get me wrong I'm glad they exist, at least that way i understand what I'm supposed to do))

I personally thought STALKER even grimmer than Fallout 3, and more dangerous. You can't sleep through the nights and have to be on your guard at all times. Also there's no god mode for when things get too much and you need a break (I know there's a patch but it wouldn't work for me).

@gracietoo -- Why don't you build up sneak & spells in Oblivion if you don't like face to face combat? Have you tried Bioshock? Whatever else it has beautiful Art Deco architecture.. ;)

heavens, I am not going for STALKER then...

I do have quite good sneak capabilities in Oblivion, and concoct a range of spells;I am limited by my level in what I can buy. At present I am running around trying to find soul-gems as I have become a vampire (yuk). This irritates me somewhat 'cos really I want to bumble about doing what I want to do and completing quests when I feel I am able to tackle them successfully. I prefer the gentler quests, like collecting Nirnroots, but every now and then gather up enough courage to go and do battle.

I love Oblivion because of its amazing scenery, and how you can go anywhere and the view changes but fits to what you would expect to see in a familiar setting, like looking down on the Imperial City. I have a cowardly way of gathering goodies; I accompany the Imperial guard on their patrols, and when I know there are bandits ahead I go on and get them to come after me, then let the Watch take care of them, and then loot the corpses.... gets a bit samey, but keeps the pennies rolling in. Then I go and stash my haul in the pirates boat until I am ready to sell them in the city ( but I have to be sure and visit the boat every couple of days else the loot might disappear as the contents of the trunk respawn. Fun game, love it, except for entering the horrible Kvatch gate, which I find very ugh.

Bioshock sounds interesting so I will take a look at that. Thanks. Just shelled out for Fable mind and I have so many games now I am running out of shelf-space. Guess I will have to have a sort out.....

You should get a companion mod (or two), then you wouldn't have to follow the guards. Some come with romance quests for added interest. Some are animals (there's a mountain lion, for example).

Bioshock is all interiors (though beautifully designed), so if you like being outside it might not be your kind of thing. It is a unique experience game-wise though.
