CS Crashes when attempting to edit AI packages

The construction set crashes when I try to manage (edit, delete, and soforth) my AI Package list, either through the main CS menu or via an NPC's AI menu. The message I receive is simply that the Construction Set has stopped working. It is a thoroughly consistent problem; I have had zero success accessing anything related to the AI Package list.

I'm running windows Vista, have the latest patches for oblivion/SI and the most recently released CS. Oblivion runs out of program files x86 directory which has given no problems before, and I am on an administrator account through vista, so it is not a security issue. This is the only thing consistently causing crashes in my CS, presently. This happens even if oblivion is the only mod checked. It will happen for something as simple as duplicating an NPC with a new ID and trying to change the AI package. I have already reinstalled the construction set.

I've done some research, also, and though I have not found many instances of this issue, I HAVE found other posts from folks around the web who have had the exact same problem -- the common link is that they were also running vista, leading me to suspect that it's got something to do with my issue. Others who have had this issue did not resolve it after reinstalling oblivion, even to new directories outside of program files.

Naturally, this is rather upsetting since it puts great limitations on my ability to mod certain things. Does anyone else using vista (or any other OS) run into this? Has anyone run into it and resolved it?

I have run into multiple people who have this same problem. I think they all use Vista, but I am not sure. I am lucky, and on my computer with Vista, it only crashes at that point maybe 3% of the time. But it does crash so frequently that I notice it. With some people like you, it sounds like the crash occurs 100% of the time.

One thought I had, is that maybe my method of evading Vista's misguided security system is different from yours. The only thing I did to subvert my own security system was move Oblivion to C:Games\Oblivion. I got it out of that accursed Program Files folder. It does not matter if I am the system administrator and I do not disable UAC or do anything else. But I do not know if you have already taken the step of moving Oblivion to another directory.

I have not heard of any easy solutions to this problem. A somewhat difficult and painful solution would be to get Windows XP, or perhaps Windows 7. Reviews are mixed over whether or not Windows 7 is any good with Oblivion.

You could try running the CS in XP compatibility mode. It might solve this problem.

Thank you both.

I discovered that even in compatibility mode, I'm still experiencing the issue. Interestingly, if I don't load any mod at all I am able to access the menu under the "Player" NPC that's found by default in the construction set. It's when I attempt to access the menu with all of the Oblivion data loaded that I run into problems. Attempting to edit or alter a package on an NPC in any way results in an immediate CS crash.

I'm hesitant to move directories, first because it seems like a lot of work (I have a lot of personal modifications throughout folders -- would I have to reinstall it all?) and second because others who have had this issue did not seem to get it to work after doing that. What should I know before making this move?

Per windows 7, I consider it. I'm a little frustrated at how quickly they seem to be pumping out OS's. If only it were easier to upgrade to XP, if you get my drift!

I'm going to test the construction set on my boyfriend's computer tonight. I don't know what he runs, but it isn't Vista. I'm somewhat surprised there hasn't been a patch for this yet, but it seems hard to pin down the precise cause. I've had the CS crash at other points before, but they're usually random, usually when I'm moving too quickly.

If there are any other thoughts or suggestions I'll be glad to hear them! I'm just curious. Where is all of the data for AI packages located? Is that in oblivion.esm? Could the .esm be corrupt?

Windows 7 allows you to run a virtual version of XP..at least if your processor can handle it. I wish mine could :)..

Ive had this issue also. Im also using Vista, though I have almost every feature related to Vista turned off permantently, heh.

I havent had the issue quite as seriously as you seem to though. Its only on occasion that this happens to me. Happened once tonight as a matter of fact. Im not sure if it has anything to do with my success in avoiding crashes or not, but I usually try to save just before I attempt to do anything that gets me a CTD. I do this (other than for the most obvious reason) because when I dont its at that point I usually get the crash. I cant recall any instance where I still crashed after doing this.

Maybe it's irrelevant. But sometimes the little things that seem unrelated end up making the difference.

Edit: This just occured to me. One thing that I have noticed that often causes CTDs in the CS for me is when I place an NPC and then attempt to edit the form rather than editing the Form and then placing the NPC. Be carefull that this isnt something you are doing, as it may be the source of some crashes also. By your description in the OP, it seems that you are doing this.

Alas, an NPC that has not been placed also crashes the CS, so it does not seem to be making a difference. :(

My boyfriend's XP computer loads the AI just fine. It's a real shame it won't work for me, because it looks like a very fun feature to work with !

I am experiencing the exact problem you describe here. I have tried everything I can think of and have read a couple of posts that describe the same issues and it does not seem that they have been resolved either. Have you made any progress on this problem? I know this is an old post but just hoping that someone who knows something will see it. I am actually running Windows 7 instead of Vista on a Gateway FX Laptop. I was running the older version of CS for doing LIP files in Fallout3 but installed the newest CS and still have the issues. I have the same crash issue in GECK when trying to select an AI Package in any way shape or form.
