bigkingbear
I have recently installed Fallout 3 on my Windows 7 laptop, and have attempted to use a variety of mods. Unfortunately, I cannot seem to load any of the textures or meshes. I have used every ArchiveInvalidation tool I could find, and none of them appear to work. I know that some of the other mods are working, such as More Where That Came From and Existence 2.0, as well as littler things like SPECIAL upgrades and GOAT Perks. The ArchiveInvalidation Invalidated! tool reports that it has done its job, and looking inside the fallout_default.ini file shows that it has changed. But the new hairs from the Hair Pack do not appear, instead I get a big transparent red block around the head. I have deleted and reinstalled the entire game again, but it didn't change anything. I have also used the invalidation tool contained in FOMM, as well as the ArchiveInvalidation Validated tool that creates the independent file, and both failed. I am completely lost, and I was hoping that the kind people at this forum (and a massive round of thanks to all the modders) might be able to give me a hand. Thanks. Branimirzg
Red ! is sign for missing meshes...Are you sure that you have installed meshes correctly? Also it could be mod conflict
bigkingbear
Hmm... there are .nif and .egm files in data/meshes/characters/hair and the appearance based mods (as far as I can tell) are Project Beauty, Hair Pack, Tailor Maid, KikaiEquipment, and a few npc armor/appearance tweaks. Oh, and Dimonized 3, using Berry HD. Might any of that be in conflict?
csb
They shouldn't conflict, as most mods (except the ones that replace default meshes/textures) install into their own folders in textures/meshes. The ! or invisible body/armor is a huge hint that a texture/mesh is in the wrong place (or not installed) (that's presuming archive invalidation is set to 1 in the .ini ... and it shouldn't be in the Fallout3_default.ini! You want the Fallout3.ini in your Documents/My Games/Fallout3 folder. So if it is the default.ini set to 1, then the one the game uses in your My Games folder is probably still at 0. In addition to Timeslip's Fallout Mod Manager (FOMM), you really should get FO3Edit by ElminsterAU ... it's great for finding and resolving mod conflicts. You'll want Miax's great FO3Edit Guide - Web-enized to learn how to find and resolve mod conflicts. Hope this helps.
bigkingbear
This may be my problem. I do not see a fallout3.ini in the directory, there is only the fallout_default.ini. Perhaps I should rename it? Or might the right .ini be hidden somewhere else in my file system? Unfortunately for me, I have to be at work for the next 17 hours, but I will be able to experiment a little when I get back.
csb
The default .ini is in your installed Fallout3 directory, this one you should not touch. The Fallout3.ini is in your My Documents/My Games/Fallout3 (or username Documents/My Games/Fallout3 in Vista) folder, along with a folder for your save games. bigkingbear
Indeed! I have found the correct directory, and there appear to be two files... FALLOUT.INI and FalloutPrefs.INI. Fallout.ini has the archiveinvalidated set to 1, and falloutprefs.ini has it set to 0. Should I make them both 1 and copy the fake .bsa string into falloutprefs as well? Branimirzg
Its 0 in mine FalloutPrefs.INI. too and everything works perfect, so you don't need to change that one
bigkingbear
Well, I'm baffled then. Must not be the .ini files, but that really makes me wonder what could be wrong. I triple-checked that the meshes are in the correct folder. I guess I'll try FO3Edit to check for conflicts, then.
csb
Well, I'm baffled then. Must not be the .ini files, but that really makes me wonder what could be wrong. I triple-checked that the meshes are in the correct folder. I guess I'll try FO3Edit to check for conflicts, then. FO3Edit won't find any conflict, but it is useful for looking through a mod's records (via the tree view in the left panel). What you are looking for will be found in NPC and Race records' Body Parts data. See where the records point to in meshes/textures. If a particular mod has a BSA that comes with it, use FOMM to open the BSA (but don't extract it!) and check the pathing of its resources. Barring a "conflict" in those two .. hmm.
