How to get the mods loaded

Ok...Here's install guide

1. Download and install Fallout mod manager(Fomm) Link->Fallout mod manager

Download 7-zip-you will need it to unpack archives Link->7-Zip Archive Utility

2. Extract mod by using 7-zip to fallout/data folder.

I will give you example with my mod :pinch: link-> http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=8608

Perks collector will add to your data folder this-

Folders-meshes,textures,sound and perks.collector.esp

If that's in you data folder everything is ok.

3. As now you have one mod that has folders textures, meshes and

sound in data folder, every next mod with same folders will

have to replace ones that are already in your data folder.

To do this just extract new mod into data folder and you will

be asked to Overwrite/replace them, click yes to all.

Same thing with next one.

4. Some mods are packaged with additional folder...when you

open archive with 7-zip and you see first folder named

data, you will have to extract that one into Fallout 3 folder

(it should replace data folder)

Also some people are adding another folder(mod name)...

In that case best way to install it is to open new

folder on desktop and extract mod to that folder.

Then open that folder, find folders (textures,

meshes, etc) copy them, go to data folder and click

paste.

5. Open fallout mod menager and click option toggle invalidation

(very important, without it custom textures won't work).

Now just activate mods you want to play and click Launch fallout

But most simple way to install is this

open folder on desktop and extract mod to that folder.

Then open that folder, find folders (textures,

meshes, etc) copy them, go to data folder and click

paste...If asked to replace click "YES TO ALL"...That way you can be sure that meshes and

textures are replaced(added)

It's even easier than that... make sure you get the most recent version of FalloutModManager Ver. 0.9.15

There's a little extra on the right side menu called Package Manager - inside the Package Manager just select "Add New" from the menu and point that to the mod RAR or 7z or zip file, the Package Manager will load that into the window on the left, the highlight the mod and select "Activate" from the right side menu. All the stuff from the compressed rar or 7z or zip will extract to the appropriate locations. If it opens/extracts an esm or esp file it loads it into the list of mods in the Fallout Mod Manager & you'll have to check the box next to the mod name to enable the mod.

If you look closely at the screenshot I added to my last post, you'll see that I keep all my "raw" downloaded stuff in a separate folder called F:\Downloads\FalloutStuff ~ my game is in F:\Fallout

I've taken a screenie of my F:\Fallout 3\Data directory tree. When you use FOMM (Fallout Mod Manager) & the included Package Manager to extract & install your mods, it automatically extracts & installs to an appropriate, working set of folders. In other words, all textures go into a folder called "textures" and any subfolders are automatically set up. Same for meshes, sounds, shaders... whatever.

You are going to definitely want to install FOSE (Fallout Script Extender - FOSE) which can be found at:

http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=8606

FOSE must be installed in the root of your Fallout 3 directory, for me this is F:\Fallout 3, probably something different for you. Then from now on, always use FOSE to start your game. FOMM automatically detects FOSE and a menu item will be added to FOMM so you can start gameplay from the FOMM main menu.

BTW, I have read that it's a good idea to install Fallout 3 into a directory other than the default that Bethesda wants you to put it in, apparently this helps any mods run better.

Additionally, there is a utility called Little Boy that is really helpful as it auto-detects FOSE & FOMM and keeps you from running afoul of that nemesis G4WL. You can find Little Boy here:

Hope this helps.

FOSE is nice, but not required, and can create issues with Vista. It does allow download of FOSE-based mods that rely on its scripting.

Once you get comfortable with Timeslip's Fallout Mod Manager (FOMM) and have downloaded some mods, you'll want ElminsterAU's FO3Edit. This utility is a must-have for finding and fixing mod conflicts. You'll also want Miax's great FO3Edit Guide - Web-enized to learn how to use this great utility.
