Tried everything I know and it won't install

After mucking about with corrupted saves I decided to chuck it all and start over. Unfortunately, I can't get the game to run. I've read BBen's guide to reinstallation as well as some other info posted here and there. I've uninstalled using all sorts of means including revo-uninstaller, which has always worked well for me to hunt down and delete leftover registry entries. I've used setup.exe on the disc. Despite every possible way I've been able to think of, I get the exact same result, namely it starts to load then goes to a CTD. Please. I'm driving myself nuts. Please help.

Is your disk damaged? Here is a link to a site that explains how to recover scratched CDs & DVDs

There is also some anti pirate stuff on the disk that dosn't stop the pirates at all, but causes problems for legal users. If you have any programs that can duplicate a CD or DVD or a no cd crack, such as Alcohol. It may be blocking you. try renaming or removing the CD copy/ no CD crack program before installing Oblivion.

Note: the DCMA (the law that is used to persecute pirates) specifically allows making a copy for archival purposes. However, Bethesda dosn't.

Thanks for the prompt response. I'm checking out the site you linked me to. I've inspected the disc and it looks quite good: it's only about a month and a half old, has been treated well, and, other than some smudges from the DVD tray, it looks pretty good (though I do see a few very small scratches which I don't know how it got). Anyway, I cleaned it well and it still produces a CTD upon trying to start the game. I'll give the CD Recovery Toolbox a try. Also, I don't have any of the programs you mention and my Oblivion disc is a retail GOTY version. I might also add that I have been running it on a dedicated logical drive of its own and using a stripped down parallel installation of XP.

Anyway, I'll try the Toolbox and see what happens.

Recovery Toolbox copied all the data so I concluded that the disc wasn't damaged. Then I tried your last tip to use the default installation so I installed it on my C:\ drive and, voila! It worked! Now my only problem is to get it to install on the logical 40 GB drive I have cleared for it as there is simply not enough room on my C:\ drive for it and all its mods. So at this point my fate and sanity are in your hands. Any suggestions? The drive is clean. I don't understand (obviously) why I can't get it to install there. I suppose until I hear back from you I'll try installing it again and try to discover what I might have been doing wrong.

And thank you so much for your help.

I've made some progress of a sort. I successfully installed the game to my J:\ (Oblivion) drive from my main OS. It runs fine from there but won't, of course, run from my stripped down OS, which is where I've been trying unsuccessfully to install it from. So the problem would appear to be not with the disc or with Oblivion itself but somehow with the way my stripped down installation of XP is trying to install it. Awaiting further suggestions from you, all I can think of is to try repairing my parallel installation of XP or, if all else fails, reinstalling it entirely.

My guess is you removed or did not install something that Oblivion needs in your stripped down OS. Check the drivers.

Give us a DXdiag listing, maybe someone will see something that isn't there.

First off, it works. I just saw your post after coming back here to let you know and what you said is exactly what seems to have been wrong. I had reinstalled XP on my parallel installation along with all my drivers as well as what turned out to be the culprit, namely the Microsoft Clean Boot application. I had run it before trying to install Oblivion and the installation failed. I then reverted back to a normal boot and, even though the installer for some reason would not close upon completion, I ended the task with task manager and, lo and behold, Oblivion started just fine. I recall now that I had previously actually used Clean Boot only after installing Oblivion not before as this time, so apparently it disabled something necessary to the installation. I'm still a little apprehensive because the installer didn't quit on its own but I suppose I'll just have to take it on faith and hope the Oblivion gods smile on me.

Once again, thank you for your help.
