Script CTDs

Hello everyone! First I'd like to say that this isn't actualy a Technical Support topic but I think this is the best place to ask my question.

So I play a heavily modded Skyrim and many of the mods I have use scripts (Frostfall, Wet and Cold, SOS, SexLab and many many others.) This makes my game unstable so I use all the best mods to help it run smoother like ENBoost, sableuGrids and so on. When I am in game I experience statter and freezes when the game need to load new places and most of all new NPCs. And in many cases this makes my game crash. I don't have a RAM problem. Just the scripts!

I play on my laptop and here are the specs:

--CPU: intel i7 3632QM 2.2Ghz

--RAM: DDR3 8GB

--GPU: AMD Radeon HD 7650 2GB

I know my laptop isn't the best and even loading the game is a miricle. So my question is: Can a better rig help me with the script problems (statter, freezes, CTDs) or there is a limitation by the Skyrim Machine (just like the RAM problem)?

Thanks for your time!

What version of SKSE are you using at the moment? Because there is an issue with Skyrim (base) expanding it's memory usage base. The beta version of SKSE has a fix for the ram expansion issue that seems to work (at least for me). Skyrim also seems to start having issues with multiple (I'm not sure how many) scripts running simultaneously and I don't know if it is a system limitation or a flaw inside of Skyrim itself. I can say that I have managed to have a script overload crash at the point that I hit 38 simultaneous (I think) scripts and have never pushed my CPU (AMD FX 6100) past 32% load and my GPU (Radeon 6850 1GB) past 78%. So I know my advice isn't perfect but may at least point you in the correct direction.

What you say is that the Beta version of SKSE causes this problem? Because I didn't always use the beta version and I had tha same problem. CTD and then when I checked the papyrus log there was a script cut in the middle.

I have about 6000 scripts in a save game but only 9 are active. So cosidering that you have a way better PC setup than me and you run 4 times more scripts I think that my problem isn't a limitation by the game but from my PC!

Thanks for your answer. It really helped me understand the problem! I guess I will find out when I'll get a new Desktop!

One Edit! I found out that in some cases my active script count goes up to 186! When I'm outdoors mostly!

Well I have some (up to 2K) but since ENBoost they don't give me any problems! Also my graphics card has 2GB VRAM while my monitor is 1366x768 so textures aren't a problem. (I can play most games with textures on Ultra without overheating!)

instead of going to the extreme of purchasing a new system just to play Skyrim (which is a console port after all) you might want to look at capping your fps to 40-45, giving your system a chance to fire off scripts without having to render your game at 60fps.

You can use things like nvidia inspector or radeon equivalent, fraps or even the frame limiter in an ENB.

No matter how powerful your machine, scripts and a shonky dated game engine will always cause you problems.

Hey man! I won't buy a new PC just for Skyrim! I play lot's of games on my laptop and I always wanted to buy a great desktop. Caping the fps doesn't work and in some cases I go down to 30fps. Right now I have a CTD adout every 30-40 minutes! whitch is great for the amount of mods I use!

Thanks for the advise and btw nice name! Not many could understand it! ;) :P

The beta version of SKSE actually has nothing to do with the script limitation I have had scripts crash Skyrim in the vanilla game (about 150 active scripts) and with both the stable and beta version of SKSE but the SKSE script related scripts I've never checked for the number of active scripts. There seem to be other variables that also cause the scripts to have issues and crash the game. A great example ot this is with Locational Damage and large numbers of combatants, not an issue with the mod but an issue with the replication of its scripts across a large number of characters.

I'm still looking to see if i can find a more complete way to fix the script related issue but all I can say for certain is that SKSE (all versions) raises the script count threshold for the game.

You could have a look at using this: http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/53045/? To see if there's phantom scripts and bad stuff in your save and get rid of them. It's helped many many Skyrim players ;)

Haha as for my name, glad you understood it :P
