katashy
Can you silence a Barret 50.Calibre? I remember reading somewhere that you can't becuase it's such a big, heavy and powerful sniper. The reason I ask is because in MW2, you can silence it, which I dont think is right... Cheers. PS: Last post for a while, unless someone posts something interesting and I discuss it... UncleRoe
No. 50 cal rifles would blow the silencer off in one shot. the barret was made for armor piercing shots and major armor targets. It's a one shot, one kill, then get the hell out of pain city weapon. not made for stealth, though if your a decent sniper you can remain hidden through multiple shots fired. Closest i've seen were concept models made for 50 cals but in the end, maintaining a 50 is already a problem, that much caliber being fired from the piston does alot of damage to a rifle, silencers would be a waste of money for this caliber application,
Vagrant0
Not a sniper, not in the military, not really even a gun person, but I would guess sniper rifles aren't silenced since it often reduces range and velocity... Two aspects which are far more useful in taking out a target. The noise from a sniper rifle is less significant in most modern applications since there is often much greater distance, and a knowledgable sniper would likely select their firing position somewhere that would either not be affected by the sound (alerting bystanders) or muffle it enough to where the position would not be immediately given away. I would imagine the muzzle flash being far more telling of a given position, and a normal silencer wouldn't really solve that. It's probably silenced in the game since the conditions in game don't allow for the extremely choreographed decisions of a real sniper, and the physical reality plays a smaller impact (projectiles not being slowed down or having their trajectory changed due to passing through glass of various thicknesses, densities, and curvatures). It might also be that the game designers don't want to have a true to life arsenal due to the number of nutball idiots running around who might decide to enact it in real life. But again, I'm not a sniper, not in the military, not a gun person, and have virtually no experience in this field.
katashy
Thanks for the quick replies! I thought you couldn't. I know NOTHING about guns, but jst looking at a 50, calibre... you can tell you can't silence it...
Harabec Weathers
Silencers on sniper rifles in primarily used in close range shooting, yes it does decrease velocity and unltiamtely the damage a round would inflict, but itll keep you alive. Military bases also use equipment the moniter ambient sounds. So if it a sniper takes a shot, the sound is detected and from there is greatly narrows down there birth of where the shot was taken from. LOl I remeber when my dad was in the army, part of a special weapons detatchment. Part of the training required him to fire a 50 cal sniper while sitting in a tree. Well he pulled the trigger and was promtly blasted out of tree from the recoil of the gun lol. Oh i had a good laugh lol.
