archiveinvalidation file

hello folks, am just in the process of putting Oblivion onto my new Windows Seven box. I came here feeling sure there would be a sticky about installing, but so far have only found a helpful sticky on mods. I have got the vanilla game up and running, but it is not yet patched, and hasn't got OOO on, or any other mods on. The thing I can't remember what to do about is the archiveinvalidation thing - where do I find it, and ( polite answers only please) where do I put it?? And is there something vital that I have forgotten to do?

thanks

Big grins

OK, thanks for that. It is not installed in Programs, so that is one out of the way, but I have come up against one problem; when I try to install the patch it gives me a message about a missing .ini file, and it seems to be looking for an older file. Anyone help me out on that please?

As Rhiana said, Win7 has the same UAC problems as Vista, but not as bad.

I have been using the evaluation copy since may, and it works much better than my older XP system. Very few problems. Fewer game crashes, smoother game play on the same hardware.

For Vista related problems such as UAC, Check here:

As for archive invalidation, that has not been much of a problem. But of you need it, OBMM has it built in. No need for a special program - if you don't have OBMM yet, get it. you will need it for other things. available here: http://timeslip.chorrol.com/obmm_download.html

Thanks bb, you have answered my Q. I do have OBMM, though not installed it yet, so I will rest content about the archive invalidation. I will go have a look at the link you have given to see if that will help. As it happens I cant get FO3 to run either, so maybe that is also to do with UAC issues. thanks.

ps didn't resolve when I turned UAC off :(

Is there a previous patch I should have put on before trying to patch with the 1.2.0416UK?

it is getting worse by the moment. The game runs fine, but all of the mods in the OBMM list are 'Unknown', not active. The Elven Map works, but that is not a mod as such - and nothing else.

Oh help. The game is not installed in Programs, and I have turned UAC off. I am sure these issues will eventually be addressed if it is a W7 thing - but I don't really want to wait months.... :(

Dont panic, I had this happen to my OBMM too. It must have hit an error or shut down incorrectly.

On the right side of OBMM there is a help button, which opens up a guide. In there is a FAQ and #15 deals with exactly this. Follow those instructions and it should fix it. It only takes a minute and it easy.

OK Rhiana, I will give that a go - I think I did look in there and saw something about that before I knew I had the problem - thank you for reminding me :) If I can't fix it then I shall put the game back on XP for now ( I have both machines on a KVM switch) and wait for Windows seven glitches to sort out. :)

No joy. I made sure the .exe's were on full priveleges ( useful tip that) and got to the place where no conflicts were found, but the two remaining mods ( OOO and Archfall House) remain unparented, so I do not know what else I can do (sigh). As BBen says, the basic game runs well on W7... disappointed I am.

Checking to make sure I understand, the game is running fine now, except in OBMM 2 mods OOO and Archfall house are either red or black?

Did you install these 2 with omods? If you right click on them and do the error check, what shows up?

When I have had this issue, the error check came up with a whole list of mesh/textures files warnings that said the files already exist. If you override this and activate it anyway, a warning will pop up asking if you want to overwrite the files, with yes, yes to all or no as option. I went ahead and overwrote them and the mods then worked just fine. It seems to be just a another part of OBMM having had an error when it shut down, and it sees the files, but has forgotten they were associated with those mods. If you overwrite them it restores that association and everything works fine again.

tip: if you decide to do this, say yes to all, or you will be clicking yes hundreds of times.
