Vista+GECK=Fail

I'm running vista home premium and I finnally decided to get the GECK. So I manage to make a small mod for the game and was ready to try it out. I saved it to the data folder, as the program forces you to. I go and look to make sure it's there and can't find it. I then right-click on the data and turn off read only. Even that didn't work. It's as if I didn't even save it. Is there anyway to fix this, permanently or otherwise?

Vista does not like you writing to the Program Files folder. When you try, it moves the updated files into virtual storage. This page has more background as well as three possible solutions. My preference is to install the game to a folder outside the Program Files folder, such as C:\Games\Fallout 3.

If for some reason you don't feel like re-installing FO3 (and who would blame you, it gets really old after the first few times) like Zumbs suggested, and if the Run As Administrator (and setting compatibility mode to Windows XP) doesn't work (and it just might!), then you'll need to go to Microsoft's site ... either the usual www bit or, preferrably their Microsoft Developer Network site and search Vista UAC, Vista User Account Control or just User Account Control.

If the KB articles and forums don't pan out, you can set up Fallout3 (or FOMM/FOSE, depending on what utilities you have installed) to run as a network service. UAC seems to trust network services  ... but I would recommend this just ahead of the link's "Disable UAC" solution ... you really, really, really don't want to disable UAC in Vista or Windows 7!

Which leaves you with Zumbs' recommendation ... suck it up and re-install Fallout3 to a non-Program Files directory. I'd recommend that for any game, not just Fallout3 or Oblivion.

Hope this helps.
