Well, I'm not good at describing things to someone other than myself (especially search engines), and even after a few hours of using the power of Google and Bing (and some searching on the forums), I've come up empty handed in my search for a fix for this strange, strange problem. SO, I turn to the community.

 

To put it simply, every time I take damage, my game rendering screen will freeze. My UI will still function (compass, health, crosshair /w indicator, etc.), the sounds will still play, but it's as if I'm playing blind, with my blindness being the last thing my character saw before being damaged.

 

Alt+tabbing out of and back into my game seems to usually fix the problem, up until I take any damage again, be it from spells, diseases, falling, maybe a leaf blew too hard past me and cut my skin. I say it usually fixes the problem because sometimes I alt+tab back in and the game screen is now frozen on the last thing being rendered before being re-maximized, and I haven't taken any damage at all.

 

It SOUNDS like a graphics card issue, but my graphics drivers are up to date and I'm running on a nVidia GeForce 9800 GT Graphics Card. Also, I've reinstalled Oblivion once now, and used almost completely different mods, aside from HGEC, a few armor mods, Stealth Overhaul, and Natural Environments, and I can't think of anything those would do that would affect the screen display.

 

Another strange thing is that I've had this issue since I first installed the game. It didn't happen quite as frequently as now, and was dismissible, only happening in large brawls with rats, gobbos, and imps. But it's become more frequent as of late, and really, really, REALLY irritating.

 

If anybody has ANY worthwhile ideas and they include (not wholly constitute) reinstalling the game, I'm up for it, since for some reason my potions, spells, and a few of my weapons are now in German after installing the (to my knowledge) ENGLISH version of Francesco's everything.

 

One more thing, completely unrelated to everything I've been ranting about. My game seems to encounter a fatal error every time I exit (after everything is saved). I don't know when it started it, I'm pretty sure it's been like that since I first installed it, but it's just a minor annoyance.

 

P.S. I have the GOTY Edition, and yes, my game is at patch 1.2.0416

Have you checked the temperature on your video card? A large battle with many creatures or NPCs puts a heavy load on the video. And the temperature may rise above the critical level. Some cards start to shut down some features at a certain temperature to keep the card from damage. If you see higher than normal temperatures on the card before the problem, remember that the temp rises when the card is loaded.

One silly question mate, and I know its a noob one so sowwy in advance, but I gotta ask it... are you running the Unofficial patches for all the official DLC's you've got? And OBSE and nifscript if any of your mods require them... if you're sure the card's not freaking out, it does sound like your game is trying to do something... perhaps too many things at once, or run an incomplete command upon you taking damage.

 

I'm using the GOTY edition and something in the region of 150 - 200 mods at the moment, and whilst I've not seen the lock up on damage issue thing I did have some problems trying to update it and stuff. And the UOP for SI freaked it out completely for an age.

 

The crashing on close thing was starting to worry me though... seems it always dies, even if I open it, don't bother loading/starting a game and exit from the main menu screen, it still crashes. Kinda glad I'm not the only one seeing that. I know its not really a huge thing, its more of an annoyance, but considering the GOTY Edition does this when its completely unmodded on my machine (no mods installed, not just inactive) it did have me worried for a while.

might want to try Fast Exit 2. Its an OBSE plugin that allows your game to quit with out crashing. I also use the GotY edition, and this plugin removed my constant exit crashing

I know it's not the temperature of my graphics card, because I've had it happen inside a cave (isolated instance) with about 9 people in it total, and one being visibly rendered. I also have a rather descent fan setup inside my computer, and haven't ever had a problem with my graphics card overheating in the past. But just to cover all ends, I'll monitor the temperature next time I run it.

Yes, I do have the Unofficial Patch for 0416, OBSE, OBMM, and the full Wrye Bash package all properly installed, merged, and in the correct load order (per the recommendations of BOSS). I don't think I'd be able to start the game up through obse or otherwise if I didn't. :wallbash:

Alright, well, I just installed the System Monitoring software for all 9 series Graphics cards from nVidia, and apparently there was an update I hadn't downloaded yet. I'll be monitoring my graphics card temperature, and I now have a new driver update.

 

Edit: I think it might have fixed the problem, but it's surprising I didn't have the most recent drivers, since I had upgraded them not long ago. I'll still be keeping an eye out if the problem arises any time soon, and if it does, I'll update, but so far it hasn't. So I'm thinking the update might have fixed it.

 

I still have to reinstall though... damned German Mods getting in my English Mods, and now I don't even know which one it is :verymad:.
