help with windows 7 crashes

Before reading this please note, I did a search on the site but came up blank for this issue. So I'm running plug and play here. If I need to be redirected please be kind. I will move along as directed. I'm not trying to crush a vibe or string any fancies.

I just installed windows 7 a few weeks back and I'm suddenly having issues with fallout 3, and Oblivion crashing during their loads. Granted Fallout is heavily modded but Oblivion is a fresh install as of tonight. Am I missing something? I downloaded patch 1.7 for fallout, should I start fresh though? My only initial problem after upgrading from Vista 64-bit was that I needed my disk inserted to run the game. So no FOMM loads. But Tonight it's all crash crash crash.

The tubes are filled with crash issues from 7's beta period, but I'm running a full on upgrade and assuming some, if not most of those issues were dealt with. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks again all

I have been using Win7 x64 since May with no problems - it runs better than my old XP.

I installed the release version when it came out, and still no problems.

I doubt if it is related to the OS.

I don't use FO3 right now, so my answers will be directed toward Oblivion. Most will be the same or similar in FO3 though.

No info on how or when the Oblivion crashes, so here is some general crash help.

Im using Windows 7 (new machine), and have been having some troubles. Crashes are common, and it isnt because of mods, as I cant seem to even download a mod. When I try to, they dont show up in the folder I downloaded them in, and one that I did manage to download, I was unable to unzip it. Can anyone help?

Prepping Thanksgiving dinner means a short answer:

With newer systems and with Windows 7, three factors jump out immediately:

1. Multi-core processors;

2. Video drivers (nVidia in particular that install with Windows 7); and

3. Installing to the default directory.

a. To solve the first, go to TweakGuides.com and check the Fallout3 Guide. Adjust your settings per the guide. If setting the value for cores to 2 doesn't work, try setting it to 1.

b. The guide also tells you the best driver to use for Fallout3 (and Oblivion), if necessary, retrograde to the older, more game-friendly driver listed.

c. Both Vista and Windows 7 have security issues with Fallout3/Oblivion being in the default install directory (C:\Program Files\etc.). To avoid UAC security issues (and some others), install to a different directory than the default (C:\Games\Fallout3 seems to be a popular choice).

Well, back to getting the turkey on the table (and, no, I don't mean Fallout3 :biggrin: ).
