Well, we are getting somewhere.

When you unzip the testdagger, it should put the 3 files in whatever folder you unzip to. Then the esp file needs to be placed into the Oblivion\data folder (the other two don't matter)

Now, when you start Oblivion, instead of play, select data and click on it. (it will place an x in the block) to activate it in the game.

With WinXP that's all there is to it.

If you have Vista, the default location for Oblivion is protected, meaning it will only allow new files there if you are the administrator and you approve each one by going into the properties and selecting 'Run as Administrator' You will have to do this each time - unless you turn off the UAC.

For Vista related problems such as UAC, Check here:

The test dagger is as simple a mod as I could make. It has no extra files, no textures or meshes like most files have. Once you know how to get the test dagger to work, we can work on some mod you choose. A simple armor would be good for that as they have the texture and mesh files you will need to learn how to install.

It will also work with any version of Oblivion. Unlike many other mods which may require the latest patch to work. Or may require some other program such as OBSE. The read me of each mod should let you know what is required.
