meathead013
i have been working on this for HOURS (at least ten) just to try to load a few mods that i consider absolutely essential to playing oblivion - without them the game is so cumbersome that i wont even bother (ie. not being able to sell one or all items to a merchant is insane, not to mention the ridiculous confirmation box you have to click on every freakin time) but ive tried properly setting up modding THREE TIMES and every time it has failed. the first time i got a weird symptom of equipment magically repairing itself so i started over fresh. i read for hours and followe the Noob Friendly installation/modding guide for Steam step for step and TWICE now it has ended in a crash when i try to start the gamehttp://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2377035 do you people have hundreds of hours to spend troubleshooting every single freakin thing that goes wrong with these mods?!? holy crap this is a total cluster frock. im about to give up on this game all i want to do is play with these mods: Darnified - to improve menus and interfaceQuickstart - to bypass tutorialStutter Remover - to remove some of the stutteringFast exit - to prevent crashing and locking on game exit thats it!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ive installed OBMM, Wyre Bash, BOSS, and OBSE. but frankly i dont know which ones to use when and which order im supposed to use them in - so im starting BOSS hoping some magical order sorting will occur, dont see any changes in the other software that seems to indicate any load sorting happened, and just proceed on faith that something is working right. then of course the instant crashes on game start again - does ANYBODY get these freakin things working?? im a former freakin software engineer for cripes sakes and i feel like im praying to the mod gods to magically make it all work somehow about at my wits end here. not sure anybody can help but this is crazy Edited April 30, 2014 by meathead013

meathead013
oh yeah, add this to the nightmare list: every time the game crashes like that i have to reinstall the whole game again - an hour of dl time. i tried simply copying the whole Oblivion directory to an external hard drive right after a fresh Steam install so that i can just copy it back over if the game crashes after trying to install mods but nope - THE GAME WILL JUST CRASH AGAIN after copying over the 'backup' directory the last time i had to uninstall Steam and everything just to start over again, im about to give up on this whole ordeal. if anybody wants to try to pull me back from the cliff im listening ... FiftyTifty
Install Oblivion. Download OBSE. Extract the files and folders to the root of your Oblivion folder (So, for example, obse_loader.exe is next to TES4.exe, or whatever the .exe file for Oblivion is) Download Darnified. Extract files to your data folder (so the folders such as meshes, textures, interface, etc. are placed in the Data folder). Download the Stutter Remover. Do the same extract method as used with Darnified. Download Quick Start. Do the same extract method as used with Darnified. Download Wyre Bash. Extract Wyre Bash to your Oblivion root folder (same method as with OBSE). Launch Wyre Bash. Organize your load order so that Oblivion.esm is at the top, followed by any DLC you have, with Quick Start's .esp file being loaded last. Exit Wyre Bash. Launch game via OBSE_Loader Edit: if you want, we could do this through teamviewer. PM me your teamviewer numbers and I'll do it for ya. meathead013
this has been an absolute nightmare endeavor for me. i spent ten years as a sftw engineer and another ten later as a sftw quality manager and i can only remember one time that was more of a total disaster than trying to install oblivion mods right now my pc downstairs is being restored to factory condition for the SECOND time in two days for the same reason - Oblivion crashed so hard when i tried to start it after installing mods that i couldnt even figure out how to recover. completely uninstalling Oblivion, all the mod programs (BOSS, OBMM, OBES), AND Steam itself and then reinstalling Steam and Oblivion and it STILL crashed!!!!! i already mentioned that copying a full Oblivion fresh install backup directory didnt work i also tried using a Windows restore point that i created specifically for this eventuality. not only did Oblivion STILL crash after trying to reinstall, Norton also disappeared yeah of course i too suspected a virus, which is why i restored the PC to factory condition. so unless my restore disks that i created just after buying the PC new have a virus, all of this was caused by trying to install mod Oblivion!!! yeah no crap. total freakin nightmare
FiftyTifty
As I said, if we use Teamviewer, I could see if there's anywhere you're going wrong.
meathead013
again, thanks for the offer but as good as your intentions might be i could never give access to my pc to someone i dont know ive never seen anything like this before im actually afraid to try to install any more oblivion mods bc it will break my entire computer to an irrecoverable state! i dont even know how to proceed from here if i want to avoid ANOTHER three hours to restore my pc to factory condition. it seems ridiculous i even have to let that sentence come out of my mouth but thats where i am at
meathead013
one of the modding tools im installing must be breaking something in the registry that doesnt/cant get fixed after oblivion crashes from modding. and no method of recovery is working for me except total windows reinstall (!!) gotta be one of the most serious computer fails ive ever encountered very strange that i dont see evidence other ppl have had symptom problems like ive had. leads me back into the question of how that could be since im recovering the pc to an alleged factory state. and then each time i try to mod ... it crashes so bad only a freakin pc os reinstall clears it cmon. am i on candid camera holy cow huge-mongus failing goin on for me right now
FiftyTifty
Supposing you're literally making a fresh install and then installing Oblivion, you probably need to install the DirectX redistributables, C++ redistributables, and the like.
