meathead013
im pretty sure it did that when one of the tools installed, like BOSS, OBMM, OBSE, but i cant remember which one. plus there was a restore point listed for directx and c++ that was created automatically also something weird is happening once i install the mods and specifically i think it involves these tools i mean theres nothing left on the pc except windows 7, firefox, Steam, and Oblivion! vanilla oblivion works, but then once i start adding and running the mod tools then oblivion crashes and even reinstalls wont allow oblivion to start so id like to try again but honestly im going to tear my hair out if i have to reload the damn operating system again
FiftyTifty
It's probably because your load order is f*#@y.
meathead013
yeah maybe. i was relying on the combo of BOSS/OBMM to do it automatically but this time im not using BOSS at all and just doing it one step at a time and ordering the load manually by logic (essentially guessing but with some logic) so far so good. ive successfully installed all the unofficial patches, darnified, toggleable quatity and it hasnt crashed!!!! woo fkn hoo!! now im gonna try adding the two or so i have left. if it crashes now im assembling the torches and pitchforks
meathead013
welp its all working now, like nothing f'd up ever even happened the only thing i did differently was i didnt use BOSS and just manually ordered the loads in OBMM. so im not sure wtf BOSS is for, but for the next noob id suggest DO NOT USE BOSS
Trypal7
Glad you got it working, when I first started playing oblivion and fallout 3, well I played fallout 3 first anyway and still playing new vegas and oblivion now, I had problems too with some mods and utilities but once you get it figured out it's a snap. I can do just about anything I want to them now. One suggestion though, lay off the coffee and switch to something relaxing before playing or modding lol heres my load order I'm using now, no problems, except don't take partners with you when closing oblivion gates, leave em home. meathead013
lol yeah i got pretty worked up. after so many hours and so many crashes and so many reloads you get a bit frazzled
meathead013
in my defense i will add that ive never encountered problems with any piece of software in history like i have with modding oblivion idk whether its the game or the modding sftw, but ive never seen a situation where a piece of sftw can become so messed up that it forces a reinstall of the os just to be able to run without crashing i didnt post it, but that happened AGAIN after i last posted it, meaning i had to reinstall the os FOUR times due to modding failure. i mean, THATS a failure, man, holy cow
FiftyTifty
There's also a fair bit of information. There are people who tout BOSS as the holy grail of load orders, but in my experience and others, it's been little more than a detrimental piece of software. I totally forgot to mention that earlier though :P
meathead013
well to be fair, it may or may not have been BOSS that was causing the problem. in fact it probably wasnt, given that it (fatal crashing) happened again after i stopped using BOSS frankly idk wtf was causing that problem. now that ive got it working, im not changing anything so i can just get thru the game without having to do yet another os reinstall. that was crazy
MarkInMKUK
Hi meathead, There are a few things that might have caused the crashing if you just installed OBMM and BOSS. The ones that have happened to me include- not running OBMM in safe mode and manually installing a mod, which screws up OBMMs database- Not using Timeslips original OBMM but one of the OBMM expanded versions, which don't default to safe mode - incredibly easy to screw the databases then- Not reading the messages in BOSS's output and doing what they advise - can give all manner of problems- Failing to install a prerequisite for a mod - generally leads to real oddities The fatal crashing after using BOSS sounds like a mod load order ... did you check whether the actual order displayed in OBMM changed after running BOSS? Particularly with Windows Vista or 7, and an installation in the default <Program Files (x86)> directory, this can happen a lot due to UAC stopping the necessary date stamp alterations
